Babies: 9 - 12 Months

My DD wheezes when she gets excited or laughs... anyone else?

This has been going on for a while but it's been much worse lately.
My DD is almost 11 months old.  I mentioned it to the doctor at her 9 month old check up and he wasn't concerned at all.

Have any of you experienced this??

  • That would have me concerned about asthma.  Can you describe the wheezing a bit more?  Does she look like she's struggling to catch her breath at all?  My DS has asthma, but I never hear him wheeze.  His presents as a cough.

  • Oh, I also meant to say, you are your daughter's best advocate.  I'd make an appointment with a pediatric pulmonologist.

  • I would bring it up with your pedi. DS makes a weird trying to breathe noise if he gets too excited or is laughing too hard. I asked about it and was told he was learning breath control. Hopefully it will be the same for your DD.

  • Z does this too. I'm so glad you posted this, now I know I'm not alone LOL

ETA: Her pedi heard her at her last visit, and he said it's completely normal (at least the sound Z makes is).

  • DS does this too. He has for a long time. I never worried about asthma because it doesn't last, it's only because he's being dramatic and he's not struggling to catch his breath. If it's asthma the wheezing would last more than a few seconds. It's one of those kind of cute/kind of weird things babies do, haha.
  • I guess that depends on what you would call wheezing!  DD does this breathy "laugh" sometimes that I've never thought to call wheezing, but you could be talking about something else entirely.  I think I would only worry if she seems out of breath or struggling to breathe.

  • mine does this too. never appears she can't breath. this does typically coincide when she has a cold.
  • My DS does this pretty regularly lately. He is just shy of 11 months. He does it when he is laughing hard or getting really excited over something only. It sounds a lot like wheezing but he is definitely not struggling for breath at the time and during quiet play he is breathing totally normal. I think its a phase of some kind. Sort of like when they were younger and they could cough because they like the sound of it versus coughing because they were sick.

If you're nervous though I'd check in with your pedi again. But I would think, at least in our situation, if it were asthma or other breathing issues it wouldn't present itself always at this same exact time with DS.

  • You ladies are lifesavers.
Seems to me to be completely normal

I'll still bring it up at her next appointment

she's definitely not short of breath.  It ONLY happens when she's excited.

For example..when going in her room in the morning or after a nap... she gets really excited to see me or DH
