the one we've had for a couple years sits on top of our fridge. the one for DS sits on the very edge of his dresser, pointed away from everything (so basically out into the middle of the room).
i will warn you, we have had soggy carpet when DH decided it'd be an awesome idea to put it on the floor and we had some wood damage when he put it too far back on the dresser. we've also put it on a short shelf that we didn't care about... so if the water got to it, NBD.
If I remember correctly it says the unit should be placed at least 2 feet off the ground. We have ours on a short side table and the spout points out into the room (hardwood floor). I put a smaller sized Rubbermaid lid under it in the event it would leak or spill. We've had no problems with it or our floors.
We have wood floors so I put it on a dish towel on edge of the dresser facing out to the middle of the room. He is still in our room so that's where it is. Do we need to keep the door closed? We have a dog who likes to drink in the middle of the night. I could move the water bowl into our room if necessary.
The directions left me puzzled too! I ended up buying a plastic baby step stool to sit the humidifier on. I have it pointed away from furniture towards the middle of the room.
The third time was the charm!

We have wood floors as well, and I had a hard time figuring out where to put it. We ended up getting one of those clear plastic storage containers with a lid and putting it on top of it. The lip of the lid will hopefully keep it from leaking out onto the floor. Not the best look, but it seems to do a good job.

I have a glass-top side table that we don't use, so I put it in her room and put the humidifier on that.
It makes sense if you think about it - it's spews water, so it's not good for wood, and I think the reason they tell you not to put it on a towel or anything is because the base heats up a bit when it's on.
We have one in each girls' room, and they are both on wood (one is on a dresser and one is on a book shelf). I know it says not to put it on wood in the instructions, but we chose to ignore that. I think they are just covering themselves in case the steam ruins the wood.
We have it sitting right on his dresser pointed out into the middle of the room. We've never had an issue with any leakage or condensation, but we live in the desert so the humidity is extremely low to begin with.
