handling repetitive questions

DD asks the same question over and over again.  Today DH and I went for a walk with her and the dog (Riley), then DH and the dog went home and I walked to the park with DD.  This was our conversation:

DD: "Where's Riley"

Me: "Riley went home"

DD: "Where's Riley"

Me: "Riley when home with daddy"

DD: Where's Riley"

Me: "Riley went home, dogs can't go do the park"

DD: "Where's Riley"

I mentioned this the last time we were at the dr and he said she's just being a 2 year old, but how should I respond.  Do I keep answering her or put some responsibility on her, trying "Where did I tell you Riley went?"

Re: handling repetitive questions

  • LOL this drives me crazy, but I sometimes wonder if it's not a phase they go through because we always ask the same things over- "what's your name/how old are you/what color is this" and all those questions we ask that we certainly must know the answers to- ha!

That said this does irritate me for some reason.  I have tried giving the exact same answer, over and over thinking that maybe she's experimenting with the predictability factor...  I have tried parroting the question after the first response.  This usually results in a giggly duel and at least deflected my irritation.  But the most effective for me is to answer correctly the first time, then make up silly answers:

Where's Riley- went home with daddy

Where's riley- drove a school bus to the grocery store

    Nooooo, where's Riley- at preschool

No Riley went home with Daddy!  - Oops, I forgot!

  • DS does this all.the.time. If it starts to get on my nerves, I say to him, "I already gave you my answer. Stop asking me the same question over and over."

Gosh, that sounds really mean now that I've typed it out, but he really does seem to understand that it's annoying me and usually stops and moves onto something else.

  • DD does this too and I will usually answer her a couple of times, but the 3rd time I will ask her to answer the question and she will usually answer correctly and then move on to something else.

  • sometimes I do the silly answer my usual silly answer is 'a chicken?!?' she than says "nooooo, its not a chicken it is a car!"

I do the reverse question to, my dd says "whats that?" about everything so I often say "I don't know? what is it?" and if she doesn't know she will go on "What's that yellow..?" then I say "Ohhhhh I seee it is a Sign a yellow sign!"

  • I either ask it back.  Or if it is getting to repeative or he is looking for a different answer.  I tell him that he already asked that question I answered it and I will not answer it again.  This usually happens in the car and a ignore and then change topic.
