Well, I guess it's official that we're getting a divorce. I'm going to find a lawyer and file. Any advice on what to ask when finding a lawyer, and any other advice on what to do before I file?
When deciding a lawyer make sure he/she is someone your comfortable with. Even with the most decent of soon to be ex spouses divorce and custody can bring out the ugly. You will be dealing with your lawyer a lot and depending upon how smooth your divorce/custody goes you will probably be meeting with them frequently. Its a very emotional time in your life and you need to make sure you choose someone who doesn't intimidate you or make you feel bad about not knowing every little law (thats what THEY are for) also, you could potentially have a few melt downs around them so make sure its someone who understand and not someone who will look at you like your an alien. I know this is hard and will lost at times, but your not alone. The wonderful ladies on this site are here for ya girl!
:.:.Dear baby boy, No one will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you're the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside.:.:
Go ahead and get copies of all financial documents, birth certificates, passports, etc. I'd also open up a bank account in your name only. If you have a joint bank account, think about taking half of the money out of there. Come up with a list of questions you have for your attorney, and goals you want out of your divorce. Good luck.
Thank you everyone! Yeah, I talked to a lawyer, and she was honestly kind of condescending. She asked how old I am (35 - I'm not a kid), and said I should google "shared custody." Seriously?! Am I supposed to know the ins and outs of all this yet?
Like everyone else said, make sure you find an attorney that you feel comfortable with. I rushed out and got an attorney and I wish I had taken the time to use someone else. Your attorney is someone you are going to be dealing with on a frequent basis so they need to be knowledgable and understanding and keep all lines of communication open. I felt my attorney dropped the ball a lot and dragged things on just to keep getting money out of me. It's over but I wish I had taken a little extra time finding one, the one I used was recommended through a friend but I wasn't happy with them.
