Delayed Vaccination Schedule..

Does anyone have experience with or plan on using a delayed vaccination schedule? I'm a FTM and DH and I have agreed that while LO needs to be vaccinated, we would prefer to use preservative free vaccines and a delayed schedule... If so, what vaccines are you planning on having your LO get and what is the time frame that they will be given? Has anyone had experience with vaccine damage using the delayed schedule? Thanks in advance ladies!

Re: Delayed Vaccination Schedule..

  • I will be doing the delayed vaccine schedule.  I plan on starting vaccinations at 6 months, then following Dr. Sears schedule, however, not doing the combined vaccinations, I will only get them one at a time.  I do not agree with giving the combined vaccinations given the levels of aluminum and formeldehyde in vaccinations.  I work in the medical field and find that more doctor's are administering in this manner.

  • I am definitely planning on delayed scheduling. In fact, we are meeting with our first chouice prediatrician Friday and if they are unwilling to do this, that is a deal breaker for me.

I know there are studies on both sides, and I am not looking to argue research and findings with anyone here. It is a personal choice and for ME, spreading out vaccines (and definitely no preservativse) will give me more piece of mind.

I do not have a schedule in mind, hoping to get one of find a pediatrician that is familiar with this and has thier own schedule. If not, then at the least I am going to spread them out by 2 weeks or so.

  • I plan on vaccinating on the ABP (american board of pediatrics) recommended schedule.  It exists for a reason.  Not that it matters but I am in the medical field as well.

Do NOT follow the Dr. Sears Schedule OP.  I was actually on board with this schedule until I actually read his book and he actually suggests "piggy backing" everyone else's vaccinations if you don't want to vaccine your kid at all.   A lot of stuff he writes in his book is just nuts.

If you are considering delayed vaccines this would be something to discuss with any pediatricians you are considering after your LO is born.  My DH is Navy so I was trying to decide if I wanted to take my son to the  base hospital or go to a Pedi out in town.

I made an interview with one of the Pedi's at the base and we had a nice long hour discussion about all my concerns with vaccines and other stuff.  The base hospital usually follows the CDC guidelines but she told me that the Pediatricians there are more than willing to do an alternative schedule as long as you actually commit to it and not skip out on shots. They also only give the preservative free vaccines.  After having this discussion I've made the decision to take my son to the base hospital since they are more than willing to work with me.

Just do some research and go with what you feel is right for your family.

  • We follow a delayed schedule for DS, and will for this baby as well. I am pro-vax though, and both of my boys will be completely caught up before they enter public school.

We are pro-vax as well, we just want to be a little easier on our LO's body. What type of schedule did you use?

  • Talk to your doctor about it.  It is pretty common to space out the 4 vaccines into two sets of two.  We do that and space them out by a few weeks.  My doctor knew exactly what I wanted to do and had his own thoughts on which ones I should give first.

The schedule is set to maximize the efficacy of the vaccine and to minimize the amount of time your baby could be exposed to the disease.  Why are you looking to delay?  I hear this a lot and it genuinely confuses me.

    This.

PLUS, with DS he was very fussy after a shot, and would cry for 6+ hours, nothing really soothed him. So for my sanity and his--he got them as scheduled, and all his vaccines were done by 18 months.

I know this is a hot topic right now, and everyone has their own opinion.  There is also a lot of uneducated information out there. My children are 13, 10, and 8 with baby #4 due soon.  My other 3 had vaccinations as suggested and on schedule by the state (back then it wasn't controversial).  I did ask my pedi about a delayed schedule because of all the press it has received as of late.  She just said the shot schedule was set for a reason (to maximize protection for our child), and it was foolish to delay, risking a serious/ potentially deadly disease (even though I stay home, and bf.  I read Dr. Sear's book, and honestly I am more frightened of the disease than a short lived fever (again, I've been through this 3X).  Talk to your pedi and make your decision based on educated research. You need a doctor you trust. If the doctor is ok with your decision for a delayed schedule,  then I guess you are fine. Just try not to give into the uneducated mass hysteria.
