Have to stop BF'ing

I've been debating posting this because I'm more of a lurker, but I really would like some support and also maybe someone on this board has had a similar experience.

At my annual check up with my OB, she checked my breast and found a lump. She assured me it was probably a cyst due to BF'ing, but she wanted me to have it checked out to be positive. Yesterday I went and had an ultrasound. The doctor who reviewed my ultrasound said that parts of it was a cyst and other parts she could not be sure of. Due to this, I have to have a biopsy. They recommended that I stop BF'ing entirely in the next four weeks to prepare for the biopsy. If I don't, it may cause a milk fistula, which is where the milk travels out the biopsy hole and leaks continuously.

I am so depressed that I have to stop BF'ing prematurely. I love it and so does my LO. I am also nervous about this lump and the actually biopsy itself. No point to this post except to ramble a little and get it off my chest. No pun intended. I am just so sad right now!! Crying

  • I'm so sorry you are faced with this :(  I do believe someone else on the board had a similar situation but I can't remember who.  Good luck!  Hang in there.

  • I'm so sorry! Are you allowed to breastfeed on the side that's not involved? I don't know if that's even an option, but I just thought I'd throw that out there in case it's possible. I hope everything goes well for you with the biopsy.

  • I'm really sorry you are going through this.  I did a little googling and it looks like it *might* be possible for you to continue breastfeeding.  https://www.lalecheleague.org/nb/nbjanfeb97p20.html

If you feel like you want to, you might consider getting a second opinion.

Good luck with whatever you decide, and best wishes that the results of the biopsy are good!!

I can nurse a maximum of one time a day on the other side. I'm saving that for right before bedtime. My LO just looked at me tonight like..."where have you BEEN all day?" But I am happy I still have that, not sure how it will work out (don't know what will happen to my supply).

Aww!! Well maybe keeping with the once a day nursing session, you could slowly increase again after the biopsy?

Also, that LLL article posted above sounded very positive, too!

First of all, I hope the biopsy goes well.

I had to stop breastfeeding when A was only a week old for medical reasons.  Since you lurk you most likely are not familer with my story, but I developed major complications after my c-section and wound up in CCU on the day I was supposed to be released from the hospital.   I spent most of A's first month in the hospital.   I tried to pump to maintain my supply but was just too weak.   Then I wound up needing to go on meds that you cannot take while breastfeeding.

The guilt was horrible.   I EPed for 8 months with my first(he had a horrible latch and pumping worked best for us)   Poor A hardly got any BM at all.   But I kept telling myself that a healthy mama was the most important thing.

Thank you for sharing. I agree with you that a healthy mom is the most important thing. It's just the aspect of having my decision to wean made for me that is sooo frustrating and upsetting. I'm sure you experienced the same frustration with your horrible ordeal.

  • Sending lots of T&P your way. Hopefully your bedtime nursing session will be enough to hold onto your supply.

  • I'm so sorry :(. I there any way you can continue with the other breast and stop BFing on that one side? My thoughts are with you! I hope everythig is ok.

ETA: sorry just realized that you already talked about nursing on one side!

  • Im so sorry :( I think it was 3girls3xthefun that was having problems with a breast lump. Maybe you can talk with her and see if it's similar? Good luck with everything.
  • Thanks for the T&P's ladies. It really does mean a lot. I will definitely update after the biopsy.

  • I'm so sorry you are being put in this situation.  I completely understand why you would be so sad.  You've made it a very long way with BFing, longer than many, many women, you should be proud of that!  I hope the night feedings can go on as long as you like.

I will be thinking of you and hope that the biopsy goes smoothly.  (((hugs)))

  • I am so sorry you are going through this! The LLL article sounds hopeful. Do you have a leader/IBLC you can contact? Ts and Ps that everything is ok. ((hugs))

  • I'm so sorry to hear you have to deal with this.  I hope you can continue to BF (but if not, take comfort that you've been able to BF this long!) and I will pray that you get good news after your biopsy.

  • Hi! I am a lurker as well. I just wanted to let you know I went through the same thing when I was BFing DS about 2.5 years ago. I was told to stop BFing and then go in for the biopsy, but I was not ready to stop. I went ahead with the biopsy and everything turned out fine. No complications and I was able to make it to my 1 year goal. A few days after the biopsy  I did have some blood in my breastmilk. I know it's is a hard decision and you never know if you are going to be the one that will develop complications. Good luck and I hope you get good results.

  • I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this.

I had a lumpectomy 2 weeks ago after a biopsy showed abnormal cells. The lumpectomy showed I had a beingn tumor --not cancer, thank God, but I have to be watched closely now.

I'm only 29 but I might have to start yearly mammos earlier than normal. The breast surgeon seemed hopeful I won't have any other issues, but they want to be safe.

I wasn't BF-ing when I had my biopsy or the lump removed, so I can't help there. I stopped BF-ing when Cate was 5 months old and my OB didn't send me for tests until I was done EBFing for a little over for 3 months. We felt the lump months before that, but he said based on my age and family history (no breast cancer anywhere) there wasn't any harm in waiting to get it checked out until I was done BFing.

You are the only one who can make the choice to stop or keep nursing.

Good luck -- just some random stats, more than 80% of all lumps biopsied turn out to be nothing! Hope we're in the 80% together! Keep us posted.
