Am I totally off base here, ladies? Of course, I will talk to my RE about this, but wanted to see if this was just too crazy, first.
IUI # 2 was a bust. We will do IUI # 3 next month; I'm envisioning another BFN. The next step would be IVF. We are entirely OOP for this, and given some other priorities we have, could only afford 1 cycle in the immediate future. So, if we do OE IVF in a few months and it fails- it would likely be another year or more before we could do DE IVF.
I want to go straight to DE- DH isn't opposed to this, but would like to do OE first. He's an optimistic kind of guy and doesn't want to face facts that that might fail. However, I want to be more realistic and assume it would (given that I am 42 and with my numbers).
Is it possible for me to use my OE as well as DE (as a back up plan) during one cycle? I know that this would be more expensive, but probably not as expensive as to separate IVF's.
Is this even a possibility? Any other ideas?
I have never heard of this being done before so I think I might be missing something major from a medical perspective. I have never had IVF before so please don't laugh at me if this is ridiculous.

Re: OE and DE for one IVF cycle?
My mother asked about this when I was deciding on using DE. I don't think I ever asked my RE about it (or if I did I don't remember).
The only reason I think it wouldn't work is that they didn't stim me at all. They supressed me the entire time, then did estrogen priming on me to build my lining while they stimmed and triggered my donor. I don't know if this protocol can be altered or not.
I would say it's worth asking your RE. The worst they can do is say no. GL with everything!
It would still be like 2 IVFs since there will be 2 retrivals. You will pay for 2 retrivals, 2 sets of stim meds, plus the donor fee. The only place you save is doing one transfer. In the grand scheme of things, a transfer is not the the biggest cost. I would choose one or the other.
Agreed. There are some cheaper ways of doing DE than the traditional methods, though, so you may be able to do that more quickly after and OE cycle; look into frozen eggs (which I'm using at RBA), or a shared fresh cycle (Shady Grove is known for those).

I think logistically to do this you would need to have frozen donor eggs available - or else the timing is not going to work out. I think it would be hard if not impossible to sync your cycles to have ER on the same day.

Agreed. Either your OE or the DE would need to be frozen, otherwise, it couldn't be timed out right. It could be very expensive. Good luck.

I did a frozen DE cycle and they do suppress you the whole way - you would probably need a frozen OE and a frozen DE.
You should certainly ask your RE though. There's nothing objectionable about doing it - just like alot of people do a mix of dh sperm and donor sperm.
Good luck either way. I wanted to go from IUI directly to DE too and my dh had the same reservations as yours. We ultimately did go the DE route but I don't regret the first try b/c that's what dh needed to be at peace with the DE decision. We are also OOP and only had enough for two IVFs.
