Breastfeeding

EPers, come in!

I've been EPing since DD was born 2.5 weeks ago. She's doing great and is exclusively bottle fed breast milk. The past two days my supply has dropped like a stone. I'm well hydrated, well nourished and feel good. Nothing has changed about my habits. I pump for about 15-20 minutes using a PISA every 2.5 hours (give or take 30 minutes). I was getting about 3 oz per breast each time and now i'm down to about an ounce to an ounce and a half each time. DD is taking about 3 - 4 ounces at a feeding. sometimes a little less than 3 depending on her schedule... she's completely demand feeding. She's gaining well and I am doing well after an emergency c/section. Any thoughts?

  • Have you tried changing the membranes? Sometimes that helps.

  • I think it's really important to use a hands-free bra and while pumping, use both hands to compress/massage your breasts to get all of the milk. Also pump 5 minutes past empty. Pumping every 2.5 hours is great - make sure not to skip night sessions though.

I think you are actually doing great for 2.5 weeks out. I didn't make enough for the 1st month so I had to supplement but afterwards I made 2-3 times the amount I needed and had a big oversupply.

  • Dd is 3weeks today, but not a c section. Could that have any impact on supply? I Epump 5x per day and get approx 35 oz per day. I pump when we wake up at 6 ish, then every 4 hrs, (10,2,6,and 10). I get about 7 oz during the day and anywhere from 9 to 15 when I wake up. Maybe go a little longer in between? 3.5 intervals?

  • Also, I've been skipping night sessions for about a week now... I also supplement 1 3oz bottle of formula a day.

  • I started taking fenugreek and drinking beer-- both help.
