Gap Kids Casting Call - Name Disasters

I was looking through the gallery for the Gap Kids casting call. Here are some of the gems I've seen so far:

Kage (boy)

CriStal (yes, with a capital S)

 Ant'Zhiyah (girl)

Londyn (several, both boys and girls)

Memphis (girl)

Tesla (girl)

Chosen Legacy (boy)

Legend (boy)

Aderet (girl)

Degan (girl)

Boston (boy)

Gannon (boy)

Ridge (boy)

Reef (boy)

Darling (girl)

I haven't even scrolled through the majority, and my eyes already hurt from some of these names. There are of course some great names as well. You can search by name if you want to see how many entries there are with a certain name, which is pretty cool. If you want to check it out, the link is below.

    GANNON

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: Irish, English, Celtic Mythology

Transferred use of the Irish surname meaning "descendant of the fair-haired man."

    But wow...there are some "winners."

I had no idea Gannon was real. I just assumed that they were hardcore Zelda fans. Either way - can't say I'm a huge fan.

  • I know for certain that Ridge is a cultural name, so I'll let a few go as family or cultural names.

I've heard Memphis a few hundred times and it's even found it's way into my own (extended) family... so I can't get worked up over that one anymore.

The rest... gawd I hope they're stage names. Legend? Chosen Legacy? Darling? OMG.

  • Holy crap, there are a lot of Zoe/Zoey. I am so over this name.

Also... I kind of like Tesla for a girl.

  • Yima!

I think Chosen Legacy is the best of the worst... that is to say it is so bad that it is awesome. :)

I actually don't mind Reef, but I'm raised by hippies so out there nature names don't bother me too much.

DS1 knows brothers Driscoll & Deegan.  It's NMS, but Degan certainly better for a boy than a girl. Unless it is pronounced like Meghan?

Yeah I noticed the mass amounts of Zoe/Zoey. Lots of cutesty sounding names - Kinslee, Kaley, Haley

I'm all for people liking science, but Tesla?  Either the parents have no idea and thought it sounded "cute!!!" or they are physicists.  It's also a unit for measuring strength of magnetic fields (shorthand B).  Perhaps I'll name my child (girl, of course) Kilodalton and call her kDa.

I read "Tesla" and thought of the metal band from the '80s.

    Did I just date myself?

I was picturing the Zelda villian as well (although he was originally Ganondorf), which probably means they're not fans actually.  And I think of it as a surname since I've known a family with it.

Da'Zya (girl...say the name out loud)

    Indifferent

I see a lot of names at work (insurance company). We've seen some funnies (Seymour Butts, Wilson Spalding, etc) but the family Orgy takes the cake. I schit you not their last name was Orgy. The kids were twin girls named Pleasure and Treasure. Why would you do that to your kids? I mean, c'mon!

  • I enjoyed this !! I searched for all of the baby girl names we are considering and these are the number of pages each name had:

    Kinley - 2

    Avery - 17!!

    Makenna - 2

    Makenzie - 2

    Olivia - 41

    Emily - 18

    Hailey - 10

I am not surprised by the number of Olivia's, but was very surprised that Avery was right up there with Emily.

Yeah Avery seems to be very popular in my area.

Keep in mind, that there may be more than you think for some of these names. For example: Makenzie may have only 2 pages, but Mackenzie has 10, McKenzie has 4, and Kenzie has 8. = 24 pages

    Same thing with Hailey (10), Haley (6), Haylee (2), Hayley (3), Haylie (2)   = 23 pages

Agree with this! Very sick of it.

Those are some pretty bad names, but they are almost what is expected these days :( ... very sad face.

  • I don't hate Gannon it's NMS but not bad, very masculine sounding. I also wouldn't hate Tesla if it didn't automatically make me think of the car, I do still prefer Tessa.

I've only met one Tesla, but she was of Native American decent (it was in one of my college classes, although she didn't look Native American) but when she introduced herself the instructor mentioned/asked her if it was a name from her culture and was not surprised that she said she was Native American. I still thought it was an odd name.

  • If my husband sees this list I am in trouble. I already rejected Marie, Linus, Linnea, and a couple of other science based names I can't remember. I don't think I could talk him out of Tesla. ;) I did concede to Ada for our first, so I might be okay.
