Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My toddler doesn't want to play with me

I am concerned because my 19 month old doesn't want to play with me.  I get out puzzles, blocks, books to engage her, and she just has no interest.  She just wants to do her own thing.  I get so bored, since I feel like she doesn't need me.  It also makes me rather sad when I read so many posts about others playing with their children.  What am I doing wrong?  Help!

Re: My toddler doesn't want to play with me

  • DD is very independent and will play for hours on her own.  She does enjoy when we play with her and she loves having friends over, but she's just as happy on her own too.  I think it's great - it really helps that when I'm taking care of DS she can entertain herself.

As long as she talks to you, makes good eye contact, gives hugs, etc. I wouldn't worry about it.  Sounds like she's just an independent girl!

  • My DS doesn't really play with me either.  He will play with me for about 5 minutes at a time, and then is on to his own thing.  Sometimes I will sit on the floor with him, and just watch and try to interact when I can, but sometimes, I just let him do his thing.  I have been assured by many that it's only temporary and I should enjoy this time as it will not last forever.

  • Embrace it! Seriously, having an independent kid is a good thing - you can get stuff done around the house a lot easier. Have you tried doing your own thing, and seeing if she comes to you to play?
