Test Results

So, we got DH's DNA/Sperm fragmentation test results today...and everything is NORMAL.  We were totally expecting bad news, as the RE led us to believe that there is a sperm issue (besides low count) that was causing our embryos not to make it past day 5.

Now I am wondering if it is my eggs.  Except all my testing came back normal an my AMH is in the low normal range.

This is so frustrating...if we are both fairly normal, WTF have we had 4 failed IVFs?  I have a call into RE to schedule appointment to discuss the test results and next step.

I am kind of relieved...if I had to pick between donor sperm and donor eggs, I'd prefer donor eggs.  That way, I would get to carry a child that belonged to my DH.  Yet, we were both prepared to talk about the donor sperm route.

And the ride on the IF rollercoaster continues...

TTC Since 10/2007 with no luck and a 'go with the flow' attitude
1/1010 FINALLY decided to have testing done, dx MFI
7/2010 - DH starts Clomid to increase testosterone and hopefully sperm count
10/2010 - Still low (but improved) sperm count.
11/30/10 - IUI #1 and only = BFN
February 2011 - IVF #1 w/ ICSI =
Chemical PG (Beta 1: 10, Beta 2: 19, Beta 3: 17) :-(
April 2011 - IVF #2 w/ ICSI = BFN :-(
September 2011 - IVF #3 w/ ICSI = BFFN
November 2011 - AMH level tested - .83 (normal for age range)
February 2012 - IVF #4 w/ ICSI = (best response ever yet still) BFFN
April 2012 - DNA testing - NORMAL, RE suggests cycling again with own eggs or using DE
On Break indefinitely...not sure we can afford the emotional and financial roller coaster anymore.

  • Glad to hear the sperm is ok.  Only thing I will say is that my levels are all within normal to high normal range but I am almost 39 so that alone is an "issue"

Each RE has offered to cycle me with my own eggs but I still have a low % of getting pregnant vs using DE.  I think it is like 36% for a perfect cycle with my OE vs 60some% using DE.

Good luck, I know it is a lot of hard decisons, none of which seem like they will actually even work.  The is a DE/DS FB page.  If you want me to add you let me know.  There is a lot of good info on it.

I am AMA and all tests on H came back normal

  • I am glad they came back normal, but sad for you too. That sucks they just don't know. We are in the same boat. How much did your DH's tests cost? we are totally OOP, even for normal stuff till we hit 4k. Stupid HSA. Nothing from the last cycle counted either.

I hope the RE can give you some insight. I also would do donor eggs in a heartbeat. I just want a baby so bad.

  • lurking...

We've had 3 failed IVFs and I think our next step is to try an IVF where we split the eggs between my husbands and donor sperm.  This should give us the answer as to whether the problem is the sperm or the egg.  We've actually never done the frag test - and my RE doesn't think there is a point in doing it b/c whether the result is bad or good she would still recommend the same course of treatment.   I hate how hard all of this is - and I wish there were some easier answers.

I have to agree with this as well. Sometimes all it takes is a new set of eyes and a different lab.

  • I'm sorry you didn't get more answers.  That was our issue, too.  We were dealing with MFI and it just seemed like bad luck that IVF with ICSI wasn't working.  If you haven't already, I'd consider another opinion.  Maybe it's just a matter of tweaking your protocol.  Best of luck moving forward.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. We are also going through the same situation.   I agree with you, I would prefer DE to DS (for your same reasoning)  DH's uro suggested the fragmentation testing, we agreed but a few days later we decided that this just wasn't for us right now. We are trying to decide what we would do with the information.

These decisions are so difficult to make. I found it to be especially hard to try to make these decisions without my RE's guidance. He was kinda like we could try IVF w/ DS, or IVF with DE or another cycle without donors and a different protocol, but couldn't say this couldn't all happen all over again...I was like, seriously?! you expect ME and DH to try to navigate through this...aren't you the one with the MD initials?! omg...I know it's not his fault, we are dealing w/ male and female factors, but if he doesn't know how to help us, how are we supposed to figure it out?

I truly understand how awful this is, I hope you are taking care of yourselves-
