Thrush :( please help

Help, we have thrush. DD is 4 weeks old today, and I've suspected she has had it for a bit of time now (white tongue). I started to feel a tingly sensation on my left nipple in the past 48hrs. We had her 1 month well visit today and thrush was confirmed by the Pedi. She put DD on a Nystatin suspension 4x/day, and she prescribed Nystatin cream for me 4x/day. She said to boil all my pump parts and bottles (she gets a bottle overnight) for the next 10 days. Is there anything else I can do? I know she and I will likely pass this back and forth and I don't want that to happen. Any home remedies or something I'm missing. I'll also wash my bras in hot water in the washing machine as well. I've read about vinegar and baking soda and gentian violet... please tell me what I should do to get rid of it for both DD and myself ASAP. She doesn't have any other signs other than the whitish tongue (no diaper rash) and only one of my boobs seems to be affected for now.

Re: Thrush :( please help

  • From what it sounds like, you may have caught it really soon, which is wonderful. I had lots of pain in my nipples, and they bled. The pain hurt sooooo bad. My DD did not have any symptoms however, so her pedi just wrote her out a Rx to have on stand by in case she did show signs, but I never had to fill it. I described what I was going through to my OB's nurse and my OB called me in a Rx for Difulcan, oral antifungal pills, and also the nystatin cream. If you dont see it going away I would reccomend calling your OB for the oral meds. Also I rinsed my nipples with a hot water and vinegar solution after every feeding. This seemed to really help as well. To help with the pain in my nipples, I mostly pumped and would lube up my horns with lanolin, and when I would feed her I would use a nipple shield. Change your nursing pads frequently, and at the sign of any moisture in there. I have hear thrush sticking around forever, and being hard to get rid of, thankfully we only had ours for about 3 weeks, and we never want it again! Hang in there, and I hope it goes away soon!

  • It sounds like you caught it early so that is VERY good. Keep using the nystatin cream after every feed. I didn't know what thrush was and by the time I got treated, my nipples were on fire and I felt really bad shooting/burning pains in my milk ducts.

Here are the things I did to get rid of it:

-Triple nipple cream prescribed by my ob/gyn (you can call them and ask them to call it in) It is a compound cream so not all pharmacies carry it. Call around and ask.

-My thrush was ductal thrush so I got a rx for diflucan. It's very important to take the correct dosage and to continue taking it for 7 days past when you last felt symptoms. I took it for 25 days. They will usually have 1 refill w/your original rx.

You should take a loading dose of 400mg (2 pills) the first day followed by 1 pill everyday.

-Start taking probiotics that contain lactobacillus acidophilus - the refrigerated kind found in your local health food store.

-When giving nystatin to your LO, squirt a little in a small plastic cup and use a q-tip to swab both cheeks and tongues after every single feed. I didn't use the full 2ml each time. Just enough to coat all of the areas.

-Cut out all sugars/sweets and white flour products to starve the yeast.

-Start taking grapefruit seed extract pills 2x a day.

-Wash anything that comes in contact w/your bm in very hot water w/1/4 cup of vinegar. I started putting a towel on top of my My Brest Friend and washing that w/everything else.

    -Wear disposable breast pads

-Don't apply BM to your nipples. It will feed the yeast. Wipe your nipples after each feed.

-As a last resort, I was going to use 1% gentian violet on my nipples and have LO feed but the thrush finally cleared up after 3-4 weeks. I still have nightmares about getting thrush again so I really watch my sugar intake. HTH!

Oh and btw, I only ever felt symptoms on one side too. I never got it on the other. My dd was also asymptomatic the entire time but I used the nystatin anyways.

  • Google Grapefruit Seed Extract for thrush, I swear it works faster than anything else. I got rid of it in both of us in less than a week. The pain was gone after a few days but I did keep up the treatment for two weeks just in case.

I just ordered pills from Amazon, they'll be here tomorrow.  How will they help my DD though?

Ok I also placed a 1 day order for the liquid concentrate and I can put it in DD's mouth.  Do I stop the Nystatin though? I keep reading how sugary it is and how it probably won't help. I'm so confused!
