Regular bed frame for crib conversion?

I have a Baby Cache heritage crib and I am reading online that some cribs can be converted to full-size beds without use of the expensive "conversion kit."  Has anyone heard of or personally had success with converting a crib using a good ol- fashioned metal bed frame?

we used the conversion kit just because our crib had latches that needed to be used with the conversion kit pieces. But if your crib can be done with just a bed frame, I'd do that. Check out youtube. Lots of people like to get fancy and post how-to videos on how to convert cribs
