Hi everyone. I'm sorry that you are all here - and I'm sorry I'm here, too. I have had four consecutive miscarriages (see siggy for info). I have recently gone to an RE and had an RPL panel done - where they only found that I have the MTHFR mutation (one C copy/hetero), which is quite common and I seem to find conflicting info on whether it could have anything to do with my losses. My RE has put me on heparin/prednisone/baby aspirin/folgard proactively.
I was wondering if there are other RPL girls on this board - or if this is the board I should even be on? I'm not sure where to go... Kind of feeling a little lost.
Re: Intro - RPL and mthfr hetero
Welcome! I am sorry for your loss. I am currently experiencing my third consecutive loss following the birth of 2 healthy children. My ob will be doing testing once this loss is over and my levels have retuned to normal.
I have checked out the secondary if board and found it very helpful. You may want to check out the if board. I found on the secondary if board many women who experienced multiple losses. You are always wcome here as well.
Natural m/c 3/28/10 5w6d** Natural m/c 9/4/10 5w4d**
BFP: 2/27/12. u/s showed blighted ovum at 9wks Natural m/c started 4/11, cytotec 4/13/12 (at 12 wks). **
First appt with RE 5/7. Testing complete. Dx: luteal phase defect
BFP 10/25/12. u/s on 11/16 confirms heartbeat
I'm sorry you're here. ((hugs))
This board is a great place of support and so is the TTCAL board.
I've had repeat losses as well and was diagnosed with compound heterozygous MTHFR (1 copy of each). Did they check your homocysteine levels? Usually doctors are not going to put you on blood thinners for the having 1 copy unless your homocysteine levels were high and indicated that you were actually at a higher risk of having a blood clot (which is rare for having the heterozygous form). I hope I don't come across rude but so many doctors just pass out unnecessary medication and can do more harm than good if its not needed.
I just want to make sure you are doing your own research too.
I was put on L-methylfolate, B-6, and B-12 (essentially this combo is exactly what Folgard is but it was cheaper for me to do it this way).

ItalianGirl,
I am so sorry for your losses. You are right. Heterozygous MTHFR is a common mutation affecting up to 40% of the population. You have a limited ability to break down synthetic folic acid which puts you at risk for folate deficiency related pregnancy complications. I work with NeevoDHA, a prenatal specifically indicated for women with MTHFR. It contains active L-methylfolate as an alternative to synthetic folic acid. L-methylfolate bypasses the MTHFR mutation and is 7 times more bioavailable than folic acid. I just wanted to clarify something the PP said. Folgard does not contain L-methylfolate. Folgard contains synthetic folic acid which you do not properly break down. Active L-methylfolate is a much better choice for you. I think it is a good thing that you know you have this diagnosis. A simple vitamin might be the difference for you. I will be crossing my fingers for a happy, healthy pregnancy in the near future for you. Best of luck Italiangirl!
Thank you so much for your responses. I honestly feel lost right now... I keep getting conflicting info and it's so frustrating!
Laura - We were on the July 12 Moms board together for awhile... I'm so sorry you are going through all of this. Thanks for the info! I am wary of the heparin and prednisone, but my doctor is extremely proactive and I'm more terrified of doing nothing. Does that make sense? I just wish I had more answers.
Holly - I have actually been reading up on NEEVO. This is a vitamin my doctor needs to subscribe, isn't it? Or can I get it online?
Mel - I *heart* you.
I'm so sorry for your losses - they are so devastating! Thank you for the info!
