Preemies

Flu shot

So, I've never formally introduced myself (still a little too raw for me to write down) but I do lurk quite a bit and had a question.  My son who was born at 29/6 at 2 lbs 5.5 oz is now 6 months (how time flies!). At his 6 month check up today the pedi wanted to give him the flu shot in addition to his normal shots.  DS has never reacted well to shots and I was reluctant to add another shot into the mix at the time. We are scheduled to go back in two weeks for the flu shot.  I'm still a little concerned about getting the shot since the CDC recommends no flu shot until 6 months.  Have your pedi's recommended using actual or adjusted age for the flu shot? Thanks!

Re: Flu shot

  • No, but the NICU recommended that we get the flu shot.  Also, why would the pedi want to give LO the flu shot in the spring?  Am I missing something?

I was told the exact same. Nobody has even recommended a flu shot, so I doubt LO will be getting one until the fall.

  • Cold/flu season hit a little late here and pedi said he saw a case of the flu last week.  Maybe since we put it off two more weeks he won't think its as necessary when the time comes. That's sort of why I thought it was strange too, but we did get his RSV shot extended this month so I didn't really question him about the timing. I put a call into DS's pulmonologist to see if she thinks he needs it. Thanks.

  • Our pediatrician gave DS two flu shots once he came home at about 5 months (in March) and 6 months adjusted (in April). I believe they were a bit different from regular flu shot which is given in the fall and lasts the entire flu season. The pedi still thought this adjusted dose was useful for DS to have given that he was a preemie. Hope this helps!

  • My LO just got the flu shot at her 6 month appt last week. She is 3 months adjusted. Her pedi said it is late in the season but still technically "active" flu season. She goes back in a month for a follow up flu booster shot too which just eliminates a shot that she has to get next fall.
