Preemies

please help!

Okay for some history....my first dd was born on her due date.  She was 6 lbs 14 oz.  I got pregnant (accidentally) when she was about three months old.

I was in L&D last week at 32 wks for preterm labor.  My contractions have since slowed but not stopped. I was not dilated but 50% effaced and the baby was at a -1 position.  I was put on procardia and was given steriod shots for the baby's lungs.  I feel as though labor is close.  I will only be 33 weeks on Wednesday.  Just wondering/worried if my baby will be okay (i know all babies are different) or what types of problems could she have at this point if she is born soon.  Just wondering about your stories???

Re: please help!

  • I'm sorry you are facing a possible preemie but it sounds like you are doing everything you can to keep your LO inside as long as possible.

My DD was born at 27 weeks and is a healthy happy 13 month girl today. Babies born around 33 weeks can face some breathing challenges (though the steriods help a LOT), need time to learn to eat, and need to learn to regulate their own body temperature. You can read lots of preemie success stories on our board's blog (link in my siggy).

I hope you don't have to join us but if you do, this is an incredibly supportive place to turn to!

  • My girls were born at 33w2d (I also got the steriod shot before they were born) and they have been basically feeders/growers.  They were on oxygen for 24 hours after they were born, but have been on room air ever since.  They were in the isolettes for a week and a half and then moved to regular cribs.  They are still on NG tubes, but have been taking half their feedings from the bottle this week (this is the start of week 4 in the NICU).  Baby A has had a few heart decels (bradys) and L has a heart murmur, but overall, they're putting on weight every day and doing great.  We've had our ups and downs, but they are healthy.

Best of luck to you!  I hope your babies stay in, but if they have to come out, they'll probably be in really good shape.

  • Your LO has every chance of being perfectly fine. I have to say I'm jealous of everyone who made it past 30-32 weeks, because the outlook is so much better. My 29-weeker has done wonderfully well; just needed time to get everything figured out like breathing and eating, and he's getting there now that he's 36 weeks GA. There are no signs of any long-term issues or any issues at all, really... so the fact that your baby has had several weeks beyond that can only help!

  • It sounds like you are doing everything you can to make that baby stay put.  Your baby will do just fine, most likely after some NICU time.  Mine were born at 30 weeks and had a 10 week stay in the NICU, but the longer you can make it the better off they will be.  Best of luck!

  • My DD was born at 32 weeks 4 days. I had both steroid shots. She was on the CPAP for about 24 hours and after that had no issues with breathing, which I attribute to getting the shots. She was in the incubator a little over a week, but after that was able to regulate her body temperature on her own. After that, she just had to learn to feed and grow, which took her a few weeks. We hit a bump in the road with reflux, but other than that, she's done very well! Each baby is different. I would imagine that the NICU doctor will be in to talk to you at some point, so ask him any questions you can think of! He will know what to tell you based on your situation and your baby! Good luck! I hope LO stays put for a few more weeks!
  • I was in triage 3 times with DS2 (started at 34w0d) and the procardia/tribulatine were very effective at calming my contractions when they flared up.  They ended up having to put me on a maintenance dose of procardia at home (and I limited my activity) and that mostly kept things quiet.   I ended up delivering at 35w4d, not due to Pre term labor, although I was having steady contractions at that point.
