baby aspirin?

I am beginning my meds for my 1st FET cycle. In addition to the estradiol pills, my RE prescribed 81g of baby aspirin a day. He said that I will continue this (plus progesterone) until 10 weeks of pregnancy (Im trying to stay positive about this...). Since I miscarried last cycle, he wanted me on it. He says there is some evidence to suggest that it may help.

Is this common? Does anyone know what the aspirin does for a FET? Does it act like a blood thinner to prevent clotting? Does it help with implantation? Im just curious why he didnt suggest this the 1st time around or why its not commonly talked about.

Re: baby aspirin?

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  My RE has me on it, too, but I didn't really understand why.  Below are a couple reasons I found online (I've cut it down):

Baby aspirin is often prescribed for women undergoing IVF. Although early studies seem to suggest a benefit to its use, these studies have not yet been confirmed in larger, well-designed trials.

One common use is for women with recurrent pregnancy loss. One possible cause of pregnancy loss involves immune-system abnormalities; in particular, the body may develop antibodies to components of the blood-vessel wall called phospholipids.

Another possible reason to use baby aspirin is even more theoretical. Study findings presented at a recent IVF meeting in Vancouver, Canada, addressed the question of why some healthy-appearing eggs make embryos that implant and continue to term, while others do not. Data from this study suggest that one important factor is the blood flow to the ovarian follicles in which the eggs develop. Such factors as age and the presence of PCOS may lower the blood flow to the follicles. Some researchers have theorized that just as baby aspirin can improve blood flow to the placenta, it may also improve blood flow to the ovary, giving us healthier eggs and embryos.

  • Thanks! Since this is an FET, he must be doing it for the 1st reason. I hope it works!

     Good luck with your cycle!

  • My RE added it to my protocol. My sister had two losses due to clotting disorders so her dr prescribed aspirin. After reviewing family history, my RE wants me to take it too.

  • My RE has me taking it and I'm doing iuis. He said it's to thicken my lining and help with clotting issues. I don't have any that he knows of, but he'd rather treat now then after a m/c due to one. My good friend took it also because she had many m/c's and it helped her carry to term. She took it until 30 weeks. My RE will have me do it until 10 when I get a bfp.

  • I am on it, but was before my IUI and IVF. I have had one loss and also have a MTHFR mutation and while there is still much controversy surrounding it, the accepted practice is a baby aspirin and extra folic acid. I was told to continue it through out my treatments. On top of that, I am also taking a seriously painful shot of Lovenox in my 2ww. My blood must be like water now!

    GL to you!

  • Had I made it to transfer, my clinic had made it part of my protocol. For my DE cycle elsewhere, it is also part of my protocol.

  • Baby aspirin is part of my clinic's protocol along with estrogen patches and PIO.  I believe the baby aspirin is to prevent blood clots that could lead to miscarriages.

  • I have been taking it for 2 years now.  Even while on it we had a very visible clot in the tissue from my D&C.  I also have MTHFR too though.  My RE just upped my folic acid and I keep pushing for a thinner as well.  I will ask more questions when I see the RE tomorrow.

  • The aspirin is able to help thin out the blood.  I think that is also why it helps to lower the risk of heart attacks for those who are at risk.   I am also on it when I am trying to get pregnant.
