Breastfeeding

So frustrated...

but I am not giving up (at least not yet). We can't manage to get a proper latch to save our lives. My nipples are so sore that I break down crying which I'm sure doesn't help the situation. At least they're not bleeding yet. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it. Plan to see LC on Friday if I can make it til then.

No point in posting this other than needing to get it out. My husband is not supportive when I need it re: BF (only supportive when I'm optimistic).

  • Honey, just stick with it - I promise it will get better.  I remember clenching my teeth every time my DD latched on.  They bled, and when I pumped it looked like strawberry milk.  Keep working with your baby...you'll both get the hang of it.

  • You are doing great! It WILL get better. Seeing a LC is a great move and is going to really help!

  • It will get better, hang on there. Get some nipple butter & gel soothies if you can, they give you some much needed relief.

  • One more tip that will hopefully make it less painful. Make sure your LO's lips are puckered out when latched. If they aren't you can gently pull then out without unlatching.

  • Hang in there!  At one point I would cry when I nursed - but it got better fast.  I'm glad you are seeing an LC - I would never have made it without mine.

  • Good for you for trucking on. I had to use a nipple shield to help with our poor latch and nipple pain. I credit it for helping me continue to BF.

This.  A lot of people will knock the nipple shields but it is what saved breastfeeding for me those first 3-4 weeks.  Weaning off wasn't an issue and we are going on 4 months now.

Best of luck!  DS is a preemie.  He did not get a proper latch until 3.5 months!

Yikes! How early was he? My LO was 5 wks early so this scares me a little!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies. I have been using a nipple sheild off and on. When we first came home I had to use one to supplement her at the breast. Now she gets frustrated with the shield and refuses it after maybe five minutes. At least it'll get me through the hard sucks in the beginning though.
