Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Post D & E - Heavy Bleeding?

Hi All,

My first pregnancy ended last week and I had a D & E last Tuesday. I was told to expect spotting for up to 2 weeks. Well 5 days later after really nothing much, I am experiencing heavy bleeding. I went to the ER last night and they said everything looks fine, and that this could happen, and could last for a few weeks. I just called my OBG who said it shouldn't last longer than 3-5 days. Has anyone experienced bleeding this long after the procedure? If so, how long did it last? I know every body is different, but just looking for a glimmer of hope that it will be done sooner than later.

Re: Post D & E - Heavy Bleeding?

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately I bled for a little over 2 weeks after my D&E. I went for my 2 week follow up at about 2.5 weeks and the doctor did an ultrasound to make sure there wasn't any retained tissue and everything looked fine and I haven't bled since.

Hope it gets better for you soon!

  • I had a suction D&C.  I barely spotted at all fir the first 3 days.  Then I bead super heavily for at least 5 days.  Then spotting, then more heavy bleeding.

My dr said all that is normal & some women spot and bleed on & off until their cycle resumes 6-12 weeks post-surgery.

Edit:  I bled for about 3.5 weeks post-surgery.

  • How far along were you?  I think you bleed heavier the farther along you are.  The first few days after my d&e, I didn't hardly bleed, then about a week later, I had a hugh messy gush, and bled heavy for about a week.  At my 2 week post op, my OB said it was okay to still be bleeding, but call if it didn't stop after a few days, thankfully it did.
  • I was 8 weeks along. When I went to the ER they said it was ok for me to bleed for a few weeks. Then when I called my Dr's office they said if it lasts longer than 3-5 days that I have to go see them. I don't know who to listen to! Not in love with the practice I've been going to so I'm in the midst of switching.
