I'm about to do something ridiculous...(NIFVR) Updated

There is a teeny tiny bunny outside my office door and it has some siblings close by that have been killed.  This little bunny is so scared and it's sitting in the corner with its face into the corner.  I am thinking about bringing him home and saving him.  Is there any chance that I can save him?  I bet he's only a few days old, I feel so sad for him.  Am I crazy?!

Update:  We brought him inside to warm up.  Then we went out and searched for his nest.  When we found it, we put him back in the nest and put some twigs over top.  That way we will know if the Mom comes back tonight to feed him.  That's what we were told to do (except for the bringing him inside part) and my vet said that rabbits don't neglect their young because of human scent or interaction so we shall see!

  • When you heart is in the right place it is never ridiculous. Sadly if it is so young and not feeding itself there may only be heart break ahead.

I would take it to a pet shop ask their advice for what you can do to try to save it.

    GL!

    Multiple ectopics, 2 failed IVF's
IVF #1: Did not get to ET, embies all failed PGD (major chromosomal defects)

Thought it was the end of our TTC Journey 6/20/2012

are they wild rabbits?  they can be a little more vicious than pet store rabbits and bite when they feel threatened.  or maybe a stupid Easter gift that was abondoned?

anyway, try to give it some food and see how he/she responds.  is there an animal shelter you can call?

I would be the same way...by the end of the day I would have a make shift carrier and a name already picked out.  So sad...I agree with worms.

  • Honey, I really don't think you should touch him/her.  I think this is a job for animal control.  G*d forbid, s/he bites you or something - you could be in for some diseases you don't want.

I'm not a fan of pet stores - they don't have the most qualified people working for them and you could get some less-than-sound advice.

Call animal control or a local vet and let them take care of it.

It's nice that you want to help a poor defenseless animal, but leave it to the professionals - it's better for you and the animal itself.

    That's just my 2 cents.

  • What happened to the siblings?  Poor lil' guy...must be terrified!  I say rescue him or her into a box or crate with a blanket and call your local animal rescue to see about the next step.  Keep us posted!

Poor little thing!!! I too would totally want to take him home, but I agree. Call a local shelter that can do something to help him. They have to know where wildlife rescue places are.

  • not ridiculous at all...I'd go get him, put him in a little box with a warm towel, and then call the humane society. They will probably give you the name of a wildlife rescue......

Now come to think of it a co-worker found a baby bunny and they told her to leave it outside and it could take care of itself...if it had fur and open eyes it would be okay outside. It was horrible to take it back outside but I guess survival of the fittest.

TTC since 2009 very frustrated 42yr and DH 40

5 cycles of Clomid with satisfactory response=BFN's
    Fibroid removal Nov2010

    IUI Inject's #3 June 2011...BFN
    IUI Inject's #4 Sept2011...BFFN
    Lap Dec 2011...severe endo..cyst removed..some remains...
IVF#1 Apr 2012 ....cancelled due to over suppression
    IVF#2 July 2012....6 follies...only 1 retrieved....BFFN
surgery suggested to move ovary to an better placement but....we moved two time zones away and are financially and emotionally empty

  • Every year there is a rabbit that gives birth to her babies in my backyard, and every year I have to try and rescue them from my dogs. When I do manage to rescue a few I take them to a local vet that works with a wildlife refuge type place. I am pretty sure they laugh at me every year too. But I would call around to some vets and see if they would be willing to help.

  • I don't know what it says about me but I'm jealous that you had the chance to hold him. lol. I've been trying to get DH to cave to my want for a pet bunny. I would have had a name, a cage and all that a bunny needs by the time I was heading home. Big Smile I hope that he's ok. Don't forget to update us.
