Cloth Diapering

Want to try CD but need help

I am pregnant with my first and I really want to try cloth diapering.

I'm having a very hard time getting any support and everyone keeps telling me that I won't do it, that it's disgusting and they keep laughing about putting dirty diapers in the wash (poop getting on clothes and stuff).  I don't have any friends or family that have CD'd to help me with educating my family so I have no idea how to respond.  My mom even said "well you'll use disposables when you leave the house, cloth is just for when you're home"...  They're so clueless about the whole thing, comparing them to 30 years ago.

To me it makes me want to do it even more to prove them wrong, BUT it's making my DH change his mind about even trying it and he's now saying that he'll be using disposables.

What do you tell people when they ask about cloth diapering?  How can I defend the poop in the washing machine, because that seems to be the biggest problem people can't get past... that and the smell!

  • Baby poop is going to be in your washing machine whether you CD or not.  Sposies have a habit of leaking and poopsplosions all over bedding and baby clothes.  So, you will probably end up dealing with more poop from what I have heard from my friends who have babies.

My boyfriend lived on a farm and so poop on clothes often went into the washer.  NB poop is water soluble and it is super easy to just throw in the wash.  You just need to educate them.  My mom came around a tad bit more the more I showed her and talked to her.  She doesn't think I'm nuts anymore.

  • I wouldn't even try. People aren't going to believe there is no smell because they're used to perfumy sposies.

Also, what do people think washing machines do? Are their machines not getting their clothes clean, or why do they think it wouldn't be able to handle a little poop. Besides that, are they expecting you to burn items that happen to get poop on them, should you use sposies and get a blowout?

  • See the thread below about positive things about CDs.  :)

Most ppl won't come around until you start doing it and they see how easy/clean/modern it is.  DH will come around, too.  And if they don't?  Screw em!

  • My mother said the same thing and, like you, it made me want to do it even more!  I agree with PP...go ahead and do it and when people see how easy it is, hopefully they will get on board.  My mother told me I'd never last, and now not only does she use them too, but she shows them off to her friends. I even just got her on board with using cloth wipes!  I tried to get a stash of the easiest diapers for her and my husband to use.  I don't try to explain pockets and inserts, I just make sure they are AIOs or already stuffed and ready to go.

  • Thanks for all the positivity everyone!

Water soluble and explosive diapers will really be helpful in explaining the whole washing machine thing.

I sure hope they come around which is why we're doing the trial.  That and of course I get different kinds of diapers to see which I like.

  • I've had people say the same thing - but not only blowout clothes, compare it to potty training!  Do you toss any underwear after an accident?  How about if they don't wipe well and you get skidmarks to wash?

After they start eating food, the poop goes in the toilet - where it is supposed to go with disposables, too.

  • I had to plead w/ my mom and hubbie - now they have no problems with it. It's just become the norm. The poop isn't that bad. The washer takes care of it after I get most of it off in the toilet. Im so glad I cloth diaper. I love it! Makes me happy! Not bags and bags of trash every week.
