Cold Remedies During Pregnancy?

I'm almost 22 weeks with my twins and for the past few days, a cold has hit me pretty hard.  Normally, I'm not one to turn to medicine for a cold - I usually just let it run its course, but of course my MIL had to tell me yesterday that when she was pregnant with my husband, she got a cold and it developed into bronchitis, so now I'm scared to just let my immune system try to fight off this cold.  My OB gave me a list of approved medicines so I'm thinking about trying one of those, but I also have diabetes and medicines that aren't sugar-free are going to make my numbers crazy (as if the cold hasn't already done enough of that!).  Does anybody have any pregnancy-safe cold remedies they swear by?

  • Neti-pot! Sounds gross but it's a med-free way to clean out your sinus. I find it helpful.

  • I used regular Benadryl when I was pregnant with my daughter and it was fine.  It was on the approved list from my doctor.  I just took 1 tab to provide a little relief rather than the 2 that will probably ease all of the symptoms.
  • I had a nasty cold at the beginning of my 2nd tri.  I took Robitussin DM as it was on my safe list.  It didn't do much to quiet my cold at night.  I ended up going to the doctor and getting cough medicine with codeine in it which was approved by my OB's office.  If its on your OB office's safe list you are fine to take it.  Just take it only if you need it.  I only took the cough medicine with codeien once or twice and it was a huge help to finally quiet my coughing fits, as I was having them pretty much every half hour through the night if not more frequent then that.

This was exactly what happened to me. Beginning of 2nd tri and all. I also only took it once or twice, but it helped me enough to get a little bit of sleep which my OB reasoned would be more helpful to getting better. I worried about it a little, but in the end was hacking coughing so much that I had to take it. Hope you feel better!

  • Anything on your safe list is fine to take. However, these are just to treat the symptoms of a cold. They will not prevent it from progressing to a bacterial infection. You need a lot of rest and fluids to keep you immune system up.

Some natural remedies are steam for nasal congestion, honey for a cough, salt water gargle for a sore throat, saline nasal spray for nasal congestion

  • Run a humidifier at night.  I had a bad cold at 22 weeks and some viral something last week - the humidifier really helps with congestion and is med-free.
  • The neti-pot and Vicks on my throat chest and upper back seemed to help my cold a lot better than the meds I was taking.
