Another Ferber Question

Just curious if any of you that have done Ferber have had similar reactions.  Not sure if its part of the process or something I should be concerned about.

The last few days at certain points in our bedtime routine (bath, pjs, reading, nurse, put in crib) DS will just start screaming.  I'm talking blood curdling screaming.  Usually its been when I'm trying to get his pjs on him.  Today it was when I tried to nurse him.  I ended up not being able to finish the feed he was so worked up.  Thankfully he got part of it in, if he wakes in the night I'll finish it then and then put him down in the crib. (From experience with him I know if he's both overtired and hungry, the overtired needs to be addressed first).

I'm wondering if any of you have encountered screaming like this.  I know its because he knows the bedtime routine and he knows that he'll be put in his crib for the night soon.  FWIW, we're on Night 8 and he's still lasting 20-some odd minutes before he goes to sleep.  Naps are mostly misses still as well.

Re: Another Ferber Question

  • When you put him down is he drowsy but awake? Our daughter is placed in her crib drowsy but awake and she usually goes to sleep within 5 mins. But not if she's not already drowsy...

Perhaps refer to the book to see how much total sleep he needs for his age and analyze whether he gets enough during the day and night. Being overtired or having too much sleep can influence this. We kept a chart of her awake time and sleep time to see patterns.

    Hope that helps.

  • He's more awake than drowsy when he's put down.  He's probably on the overtired side as well, we're working on naps via Ferber as well...but not having much luck.  I give him 'cheater' naps if he's in desparate need of daytime sleep, but its not what he should be getting.

Honestly, my concern is more the screeching than it is the time it takes to get him to sleep.  I'm wondering if others have encountered screeching like this before bedtime as well...if its a normal part of Ferber or if its a sign that Ferber isn't a good match for my son.
