Infertility

Intro and Question

Hello. I usually stay on 3TC, but have been lurking on IF lately. My user name use to be RealMomma, before a computer virus crashed my system. I am now back after a  break from Jan-April, and under this name.

DH and I have been TTC since April 2010. Our original plan was to do IUI's, since I O on my own, and his counts are slightly low, but not too bad. The problem is my left tube is blocked and that is the side my body seems to favor. My physician doesn't want us to "waste" money on an IUI where the follies are on the bad side. So in a 6 month span we were actually only able to do one IUI. We are going back to her in April to discuss a treatment plan again. We were thinking about trying 3 more months or so of IUI and then moving on to IVF.

I noticed that most everyone on this board is doing or has done IVF. If IUI was an option for you, when did you decide to move on to IVF? Also, I understand that my physician would want to clip the blocked tube before doing IVF, has anyone been through that? TIA ladies!!!!

Re: Intro and Question

  • Hi there! Welcome to the IF board. It is a great group of supportive women, although I'm sorry you find yourself here. My RE wanted us to do 4 IUIs before moving onto IVF, and after the 4th she convinced us to try it once more. Unfortunately we had no luck with IUIs, but discovered during our 1st IVF cycle that we might have a fertilization problem that was causing our past failures. I have no experience or advice regarding blocked tubes (or clipping them). Best of luck on your next cycle and making a plan!
After 5 TI Clomid cycles, 5 IUIs, and 2 IVFs we finally got our BFP!
    Beta#1 (12dp3dt)= 353, Beta#2 (15dp3dt)= 1466, Beta#3 (22dp3dt)= 14,139, First u/s: TWINS!!

  • Welcome to the board! I don't have the same issues as you but we did one IUI cycle only. My RE actually suggested we skip IUI all together and go to IVF but I was stubborn and wanted to waste the 5k... If we had IF coverage I may have done a few more. My firm dx is endo and my RE never recommends IUI for that based on his lack of success with endo an IUI (there are reasons he thinks this way which I can get on board with). We are also 100% OOP and I didn't mind to spend the extra to have a better chance. And lastly, I will be 35 here shortly and since IVF is the only way to know egg quality, that was a huge plus for us.

GL to you and your DH!

  • We just finished iui # 5. I wanted to keep going because my insurance does cover iui's, but I will be completely OOP for IVF.  We thought we would be successful with IUI, but obv that has not been the case so far. With our 2nd & 3rd opinions, they both said MFI as well (which the 1st RE didn't even tell us about) So, we did 1 IUI with the new RE & if that doesn't work, we are now moving onto IVF.

Welcome!  Sorry you need to be here but you will get lots of great support from the ladies here!  I have no experience with blocked tubes but I do know that they are almost always clipped/removed to prevent fluid build up during/after and IVF cycle.  Good luck!

  • Best of luck to you.  My last RE's rule of thumb was no more than 3 tries at anything, if it doesn't work in 3 either try something else or move on.  We debated on our third IUI and then ended up converting to IVF as I became over stimulated.  It was wither that or throw away the money spent on the IUI.
TTC since 2008, our little miracle arrived July 2013!
