Plus Sized Mommas, come in

I was plus sized before getting pregnant (I think size 20 pants). I gained 27lbs during my pregnancy and have lost it all and am hanging steady at my pp weight. The only thing that I have that really fits right now are some work-out pants. I wore these before pregnancy but they are getting a little loose now. Since I weigh the same, I take that to mean some of the weight has moved up top...My belly still looks 4 months pregnant. My Dr said my uterus is still a little swollen from the surgery (and fibroids) and to give it another month.

I went shopping today because I at least need a pair of jeans or something. My maternity jeans fall off. Well, everything looked awful on me. Any tops I try on still make me look pregnant and pants looked horrible because my tummy is so much bigger than my legs- so if they fit around my tummy, they were huge in the crotch/upper thigh area and looked ridiculous.

Ugg- what to do? Where are you shopping? I hate to shop on-line because I like to try stuff on and returning it via mail seems like such a hassle, but I don't fit into anything in the regular stores anymore except Lane Bryant.

I pretty much shopped at Lane Bryant, the Avenue, and Fashion Bug Plus.  I was a 24 pre-pregnancy and although I was still a 24 afterwards, it was a different 24, if that makes sense.  And I will be honest and say that I used my belly band for a few months after my son was born.

Same here. Even though I'm still the same size, nothing fits them same. I carry my weight lower now where everything has just sagged downward.

  • Same problem here. I actually gained 18lbs in my pregnancy and ended up losing 30 after her but I was still the same in jeans. My stomach was terrible though. No shirt looked right at all. I only shop at Catos because I find my best stuff there.

  • I was an 18 pre-pregnancy and a 16 post-pregnancy. I shop at Lane Bryant and Torrid. For jeans try the Right Fit jeans at Lane Bryant. They have three different fits for different body types as well and petite, average and tall lengths. I went down a size after having the twins and my shape chaned so I had to get new jeans and these fit me the best. Try a pair. They might surprise you.

  • I also had to change where I shopped.  Post-babies the pants at Lane Bryant just didn't sit right on me.  (Huge bummer because I used to work there for many years and I loved their pants!)  I now have the best success with Old Navy's website.  Free returns (by mail only) so you really can't go wrong to at least try them out.

  • I was a size 20W too when I got pregnant.  Now I'm a 16.  I lost about 50 lbs last year but the gut is still there.  I am so horribly apple shaped - big boobs and belly - nothing looks right.  Even 16 pants are baggy in the butt and legs.  The best thing I can do is buy stretchy.  I get elastic knit stretchy anything kind of pants.  I looked great in maternity clothes!  I could wear non-plus sized stuff.  So I realized I just had to find something that would stretch around the middle but still fit everywhere else.

Shirts are another headache.  I'm not one of these women who doesn't mind their muffin top giant spare tire shining in a skin tight stretchy tee.  I usually look for more fitted button up tops.  And the boobs help a bit, they pull the shirt away from the body so that it doesn't cling to just belly, but all in all I still look really overweight from the waist up.  I've also found a few dresses that look really really good - one's even a 14!  Just try everything on, you'd be surprised what looks good on you that you never would have picked otherwise.

But I feel ya about looking 4 months pregnant.  I still do.  I can't wear anything with an empire waist or a tie under the bust because I fear someone will be like aww when are you due?  LOL  JCPenney has some ok plus stuff, Cato's, an online group of stores called One Stop Plus has a big selection.  I order pants from there because they have talls and their tops are longer (I also don't want the muffin hanging out the bottom of my shirt!).

  • I have the same problem, except I haven't yet lost my baby weight (I blame it on breastfeeding!) but right before I had gotten pregnant I had lost 30 pounds, then during pregnancy I gained that back. Now I need to loose about 20 pounds to get back to right before I got pregnant. But anyway, my clothes look much worse on me than before I got pregnant because my stomach. Its flabbiness sticks over my pants if they fit my legs, and no matter what, shirts look terrible if they cling to my stomach at all. I have looked at a few different places for jeans/pants that fit, but its no use, so I just have a few pairs from before and bought a couple new ones at Walmart. Meh, I'm cheap.
