Breastfeeding

Those who both BF and Pump

I BF but have to use a nipple shield to do so. I also pump and give a bottle at least once a day to put his vitamins in and let DH do a feeding overnight/early morning. Sometimes I will give more bottles if we are going out in public for a few hours.

My question: do you plan on staying with the slow flow/level one nipples throughout breastfeeding or going up to level 2 at 3 months, etc.?

Re: Those who both BF and Pump

  • My plan is to stay with unless we see a reason to go up. My thinking is that the higher flows are for FF babies who take increasingly larger amounts and thus would take longer time to eat without the high flow whereas BF babies basically top out and high flow wouldn't take long enough for them to realize they're actually full.

  • DD is almost 9 months and still using Stage 1 nipples.  I haven't seen the need to go up.

  • I had intended on staying with Level 1 but around 4-5 months old the daycare teachers were telling me he was struggling and crushing the nipple when drinking (he was a really stong latch).  However, I still resisted.  Until DH was home with him for a couple of days and confirmed what daycare was saying.  So, around 6 months of age I moved up to Level 2 and it did not impact breastfeeding at all.  I do not plan to go to Level 3.

Still using slow flow. She holds bottles herself so daycare just puts her on a bobby and let her feed herself.

  • Nina is 8 months old and we still use the slow flow nipples.  She does fine with them.

  • Still slow flow here.
  • We stuck with the slow flow until he was constantly sucking them flat and getting frustrated to the point of refusing half his bottles.  We moved to level 2 around 7 months.

I'm sorry I would have to question that with the daycare.  They really just put her on the boppy?  Yikes.  I'm so glad that my daycare actually holds the infants while they eat.

Sorry no paragraphs, bumping from my phone.

Yeah, I would not be ok with this at all.

    We still use slow flow.

  • I have a really fast let down. We were using level 1 but DS suddenly started rejecting the bottle. We've even trying to get him to take them again and seem to have made some progress by switching to level 2. So, I think it depends on what your LO is used to. If he finishes from you in just a few minutes he could start to get frustrated if the bottle is a lot slower. Just my theory though.
  • i use slow flow. it's weird though b/c she gets one-two formula bottles a day & for those she is level 2. i think the powder clogs & makes the formula bottles go slower b/c if i try a level 2 on breast milk, she will choke.
  • Just have to say SavedByLove..i LOVE the pic on your siggy..soo cute

  •  We are still on the newborn/slow flow/level 1 nipples. When taking a bottle, though, he's starting to act a little frustrated and crushing the nipple so we may wind up moving up soon.
