Cell Phones

The post about ear rings got me thinking about how old we were to get cell phones compared to when kids get them now...so how old were you and when do you think you'll let your LO get one?

Re: Cell Phones

  • I was 18 lol!!  I doubt DS will wait that long, but I really don't want to get him one when he is like 8.  I can see myself getting one of those phones where he can only call home or 911 (those still exist, right??)

  • We had a cell phone we shared...I was probably in 8th grade at the time...well, it may have been closer to the end of 10th grade, due to me having it in the car when I would drive.  So maybe closer to 15? I got my own when I went to college so I could call home.

I don't want my children having cell phones with capability to call anyone and everyone.  Also, no texting/internet capabilities.

  • I was 18, my hometown didn't have any service so nobody had one. I think when she is old enough to go out with her friends without a parent. So that will depend on her maturity level.

I didn't get a cell phone until i was like 19 but I had a pager when I was 15 :) I think one that only allows him to call home, 911, or certain numbers and is prepaid would be ok. Definitely no texting or apps. I'm not sure at what age though. I think it depends on maturity but I'd like him to have one if he's going out to play or to a friend's house.

  • I got my first cell phone when I was 17.  Before then, my brother and I shared one, but then he went to college and took the shared phone with him.  It did not have texting. Heck, it barely had a camera.

I would think about a cell phone for DS when he's in middle school, but only if he does afterschool activities and would need to call me.  It would have no texting, no internet, and it'd be prepaid.  If he's responsible with it and hardly ever reaches the prepaid limit, we'd talk about adding features.

  • I got my first cell phone at 16 which I had to pay for.  I am thinking the same for DD.  I guess she will be a total loser since it seems as though kids are getting them very young. Surprise

  • I got my first cell when I was 18. I was paying for it, so it had texting.

My 11 year old doesn't have one yet, I told her she could as soon as either she could pay for it, or I feel she has a need for it. So far that isn't the case since any place she goes there is an adult with a phone that I can reach. When it does come time to get her one, we can add her to our plan for $10 and then she would also have access to our unlimited texting and data.

  • I got one my freshman year of high school (1999-2000) but I could only use it when I was going out after school. It was technically my dad's and the only caveat was that I had to answer it every time he called. This was when boys who could drive were in the picture! Lol. I still have the same phone number though. I would be really upset if I ever had to change it.

I know by the time DS gets older, toddlers will be carrying cell phones! I probably won't' allow it until he is responsible or starts going out with his friends a lot. So I am thinking middle school. I know that may change, but I hope not to cave any sooner than that.

I keep waiting for my 7 year old nephew to show up with one. (My brother and his wife are divorced, so I am expecting his mother to just give him a phone one day without discussing it with my brother).

  • Well this post just makes me feel old. Beepers were the cool thing when I was in high school. I didn't have a cell phone until I graduated college.

I don't envision myself allowing her to have a cell phone before she's in high school. That's when I got my own phone line (which was a phone connected to a cord!). We'll see how it pans out. Thankfully, that's a ways off.

this glad i'm not the only old lady here :-)

  • I had one when I was 16, but I lived overseas and my mom worked shift work, so she needed to be able to get in touch with me NO MATTER WHAT (like when 9/11 happened and I was planning to head into the city). I barely used it except to talk to her and occasionally call a friend. It was a cheap plan, which is really all a 16 year old needs. No data or texting.

Not sure when we'll let DD get a phone. I agree it depends on maturity level...
