When I was pregnant I thought I would only like snaps but in my CD research I read that you should get a mixture of both. Snaps usually last longer and older babies can undo hook and loop, but newborn diapers are more easily adjusted to fit. I use mostly prefolds and fitteds for my newborn, and I wish now I had bought more aplix covers because they really are easier to adjust for his size. I don't know which I will prefer once he moves to my OS pockets, but for now I really love my two aplix covers.
I like both and I like them for different reasons. Sometimes I just need H&L because my LO is being crazy and I need to get her diaper on quickly. Also, my sitters like usin H&L so I have a bunch for them. But I like snaps for night time because they don't slide open (sometimes I feel like the H&L kind of slide). Also, my snap diapers look brand new while my H&L have aged much faster. And my LO figured out how to rip off H&L a few weeks ago. So I like having both.
Right now I like the H&L because it seems like it is easier to get a good fit on my small baby. But I think when she starts being able to undo the diaper, then we will use snaps more often. We have both.

Hook and loop/aplix for the newborn stage- easier to adjust. Snaps the rest of the time, they just seem to last longer plus I just throw them in the wash, and don't have to worry about attaching the velcro to the laundry tabs

I still prefer hook and loop because I hate having to fasten a diaper 6 times on my squirmy boy instead of just twice.
He has started taking them off. It's fine if I either make him wear a onesie or pants, or if I put it on backwards.

I prefer snaps, but I have 2 toddlers. If I were CDing a nb, it would be aplix all the way.
Snaps all the way.
1. We had an issue with the hook and loop wearing out on one of our covers while DS was still a newborn. Annoying.
2. The aplix would sometimes rub on DS' skin (or mine if we're skin to skin, and it was rough on me -- can only imagine how it felt for him).
3. We've had no issue at all with the snaps. Love 'em.
