At what point do they talk induction for big baby?

I'm having a growth ultrasound next week at 35 weeks d/t measuring big. At what point do they start talking about induction?

Re: At what point do they talk induction for big baby?

  • My Dr. told me they would just schedule a c-section if they determine there's a possibility the baby is 11 lbs or more. She never said anything about inducing early, but I would think the process is different everywhere. Good luck!!

  • My DD2 was estimated to be about 10.5 lbs.  They never mentioned inducing.  When I did go into labor at 39 weeks, the midwife (who is part of an OB practice) did offer the option of a C Section.  I declined.  I delivered a 10lb 14oz, 23.5 inches long baby without any issues.  I pushed for 15 min. IMO, Unless you're an extremely petite women and/ or there is some pelvic disproportion issue, estimated fetal size alone is no reason to induce or have c section.
  • They may talk about it sooner, but my doc wouldn't schedule it for earlier than 39 weeks. Even at 39 weeks, baby was just too big, though. I elected to have a c/s per her recommendation at 39wks 3days. 10lbs 14oz.

I agree with this 100%. Hopefully your doctor won't talk induction because of a "big baby". If you look on the Natural Birth board, one of the most recent posts is about declining an induction for that reason. One of the responses has a very informative link and some important facts you might want to check out.
  • Mine hasn't yet, but I have GD and my u/s tech as well as my GD nutritionist said that they will induce me between 38-39 weeks b/c my LO is big already - 87th percentile according to the growth u/s I had on the 2nd.
  • I'm growing a big one, too.  I asked about this, and she said never before 38 weeks, but emphasized they would prefer 39+ weeks.  And they won't even induce at all if your cervix isn't doing what it's supposed to be--dilating, thinning, etc.

I agree with all of you. I did go for the c/s because my 3rd baby, whom I delivered vaginally, med-free was 10lbs and did come very close to getting stuck. I never wanted the details, but it was almost a very, very bad situation. Once this baby started looking like a 10+, we chose c/s with confidence! Best decision ever.

  • It really depends on who your doctor is. I lived in a town where two doctors induce as early as 36 weeks. Im not saying I agree with them but they will induce people just because the person wants to have there baby. Im sure they would want to induce a big baby that early. Most of there babies are around 5 to 6lbs. Ive never been to them just seen how they work.

  • I do not have GD, but a large baby with moderate to high risk for shoulder dystocia. I have had no mention of inducement, but my drs have made it clear that if my vaginal delivery doesn't go as planned I will have an emergency c/s. I am 5 days away and still nothing scheduled.

  • I had a 10 pound baby and induction was never discussed. I was a week overdue when I had him.

  • Lurking here, but- I was induced at 39 and 2 because I lived 102 miles from the hospital and was 4cms for a few weeks. Thank God we did, because dd was 9,1 (not even that big compared to some of you) because she had shoulder dystopia, and bad. We were on our last resort before breaking her collarbone when she finally popped out. She was too tightly wedged for an emergency c. I think if they need to induce early, do an amino to check for lung maturity, and if they aren't, steroids and wait. It's not a best case scenario for anyone, but life isn't always perfect.

Those doctors should lose their licenses. I'm not even close to joking.

    This!

10lbs seems huge but there are women delivering 10lbers every day naturally.  Where I live (Vancouver, Canada) they just dont' do growth u/s unless there is some reason (like GD or measuring way ahead) to think baby might be large.

  • My dr. Offered an induction at 39 weeks if and only if the baby was measuring big (like my DD was) AND I was dilated at least 1-2 already on my own.  Thankfully the little guy is measuring right on track so far (52nd percentile) so I won't be taking her up on that offer. I really didn't like the idea of being induced at 39 weeks.

  • My 1st was considered "big for me" @ 8.5 lbs.   I am just under 5ft and was 90 lbs pre-pregnancy.  DD got stuck, swallowed too many fluids and was born not breathing, completely BLUE= special care nursery.  I had a 4th degree tear/4 month recovery.  It was terrible for everyone involved.  I went into labor on my own but was given pitocin...

My second, I had the option of a C-Section or induce early (as to not reopen that large of a tear and they quoted previous LGA), I was induced with a "normal" sized baby (7.5lbs) at 38 wks 3 days.   The birth went off without a hitch.

My third, they attempted a 38 week induction but the hospital changed the rules and 39 wks was a new requirement (even with the previous 4th degree tear).  I went into labor on my own @ 38 wks, 5 days. My 3rd child was 6.5 lbs.  It was really exciting to go into labor on my own and have everything go smooth.

  • Ds1 measured big the whole time an my OB will not even considered induction until after your edd. He goes by u/s are generally wrong and he's had plenty of patients deliver 9 and 10lb babies. My water broke at home at 40w5d but ds1 wouldn't drop an I never dilated. He came out 9lbs 12oz by c/s. my pelvic area was just to small for him. I have no regrets on how thy birth went or any hard feelings with my c/s.

  • With my first, (10lbs2oz), my OB began discussing the possibility of induction at my appointment when I was 39w6d.  At that time she gave me the option of the earliest induction being at 41w1d, as she said that she does not like to induce any earlier than 7 days past EDD, unless absolutely necessary.

  • My second baby was born 10 lbs 12 oz, but the only reason they induced me (at 39 weeks, 5 days) was because she had low fluid. It ended with a c/s due to failure to descend past my pelvic bone. That said, I don't know of many doctors that would induce due to size unless there was other circumstances involved. In fact, despite measuring ahead consistently, the only reason I had an u/s later in pregnancy was because the doctor suspected excess fluid and was concerned (come to find out it was a big baby with the opposite problem).

  • Around my due date, mine offered to schedule an induction at 41 weeks, but I held out for the latest possible date they'd let me go to, which was, at 41wk 3 days. Thankfully, I went into labor Saturday night and DS was born Sunday night (induction would have been Monday).  Induction is not my idea of a good time -- that is some painful labor, take it from someone who had her water broken and pitocin.

In any case, I think the longer your baby is in there, the better.  A large, healthy, fully-developed baby is a much more ideal little person to care for upon birth.

From what I understand, the measurements are not always accurate either.
