Preemies

blocked tear duct

We have a follow up appointment with the eye doctor on the 19th. Aiden got an okay from the eye doctor while he was still in the hospital. No diseases of the eyes but did say his eyes were premature.

They did say Aiden had blocked tear ducts and he gets a lot of drainage from his eyes when he cries. We just wipe them away with the wipes we took home from the hospital that are sterile...but we are almost out of those.

Does anyone else have this problem? What wipes are safe to use on the eyes?

We do eye massages but we are hoping its just a preemie thing.

Re: blocked tear duct

  • My Aiden had a blocked tear duct when he was discharged.  We just used a cotton ball soaked in warm water to massage it.  Eventually it went away.  I don't think it's a preemie thing.  I think all children can get this.

My nephew, a 34 week preemie, also had this, but his pedi said that all children can have it.  The pedi said that it might go away in a year, if not, they could do a quick procedure to clear it.  When he was 1, it was still blocked, and in a quick procedure the eye doctor cleared it out.

  • Jack had a blocked tear duct. It cleared up on it's own after a couple months. We'd just use a cotton ball or soft washcloth soaked in warm water to massage it and wipe away the crud. Hopefully your LO's will clear up on it's own as well.

  • We have had issues with this with my DD. Doctor says sometimes it will take up to 9 months old to get rid of it! I just clean with a warm soft tissue and do the massage. I think that is all you can do apparently.

We did this too. Also, if you are breastfeeding/pumping, you can try a bit of BM in the corner of the eye and massage it in a few times a day. I think this is what finally helped clear it up for my dd.
