2nd bday party with just family

We planned a semi big bday party for our sons first bday, but he got very ill and we had to cancel.  This year we were thinking of just having a family style bday - some food, cake and about 12 family members.  Anyone else do a low key party for their  2 yr old?  Though next year he would understand that it was his special day and then we could do the friends, kids and family bday thing.  Just curious.

  • We did this for the first and second birthday parties.  It was nice and not stressfull at all.

  • We just had family over for DD's 1st and 2nd birthdays.  At this point, she is happy as long as there is cake and birthday hats- she doesn't care who is there.

DD just turned 4 and ALL of her birthdays have been family oriented.  WE are not having a huge kids party until she is 5/6 so she can remember them and that she is appreciative of the party and she understand what it is all about (we could have probably done a friend party this year, but opted not too).  I feel at young ages the party is more for the parents.

    Same here.

  • We did a very big party for the first birthday, then a small party for her second.  We only invited her grandparents, great-grandparents and our siblings (with their children.)  It was great.  We had pizza, chips & dip, cake and ice cream.  For her third, we did a party place with all of her little cousins.

  • We had a party w/ just the immediate family. I was in labor too. We tried to make it special for DD and gave her so many gifts. She lost interest after 5 min and doesn't remember the day whatsoever. I think you're totally fine w/ 12 family members.

  • My closest family member is 18-19 hours away, so while I invite them and would love for them to be able to come (hoping this year they can - she'll be 3) I also invite all my co-workers who have kids around her age as there were a lot of us who had kids within a 6 month period, and her daycare teachers. They haven't been huge parties, probably the size of a family only party but without the family.
  • Nope, that's what we did for DD's 2nd birthday party, too...just family. Next year we may actually have a party with friends.
  • For DD's 2nd birthday party we kept it really low key.  We don't have family near us so it wasn't a "family" event, but we have several friends here that we consider our "adopted families" because we are all in the situation of not having family near by and that's who we invited.  I think we had a grand total of 15 people come, 4 of which were kids DD's age (the ones we hang out with almost every weekend anyway) and it was a blast!  We just did a Hawaiian themed bbq (I did Hawaiian themed goody bags) and had a few games to play and everyone just hung out.  DD still knew it was a special day and it was low key and easy.

  • We had just moved before his 1st so it was just us + 5 family members flew or drove in.  We still don't know anyone well enough here, so again for his 2nd, it was just us and 2 family members that drove in.  We don't live near any family so it was low-key.

  • DD is 2. For her 1st birthday we did a huge bash at my parents house with family and friends. We probably had a total of 50 people there. For her 2nd we did a party at Pump It Up, a place with inflatables to bounce on and play in. We had about 25 adults and 18 toddlers. We originally had more toddlers on the list but a bunch of kids got sick at the last minute and cancelled. DD had a blast! I'm thinking a pizza party for her 3rd birthday next year at a famous Chicago deep dish pizza place here.
