Toothpaste for a 2 year old

I'm reading that a 2 yr old can have a pea sized amount of regular toothpaste but they must spit out the excess.  Um, how would I get my 25m old to spit it out?  Does anyone still use the training toothpaste after 2?

Re: Toothpaste for a 2 year old

  • They don't have to spit it out and are fine with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Our dentist recommended a fluoridated kids toothpaste (like crest for kids) at his last checkup, when he was 18 months. We've been using it since and he doesn't spit it out.

  • DD uses the non-flouridated kids toothpaste still.  She doesn't quite have the spitting thing down but she tries.

  • I use regular floride toothpaste for DD, and I've never even tried to get her to spit.  We usually buy the Colgate toothpaste with Disney princesses on it, but I've used my Crest for her before too.

DD's dentist said there is absolutely no problem with DD swallowing a small amount of regular toothpaste.

My dad is a dentist, and growing up we swallowed regular toothpaste instead of spitting until late elementary school.  (My dad didn't trust us to brush our own teeth until then :-) )

  • Up until about 2.5 I was still biying the "baby" non flouride. But when we moved for some reason ot was hard to find in the shops and the only kind they had was mint flavoured which DD refused to use! So that's when I started getting reg. Kids brand toothpaste and using small amounts. I was worried at first cause she still doesn't spit. After reading some replies I feel better about it now :)
  • We use Tom's flouride toothpaste.  She tries to spit and I always give her water to drink afterwards.
  • We use Colgate Kids, bubble fruit flavor,  she sometimes spits (pretends) then drink water after.

  • We do, we told pedi that LO won't spit and she said to just use the training toothpaste.
