DD is day time potty trained what about night

SO today was day 6 in panties. Poop and pee on toliet we only put pull up on her at bed time. She rarly naps and if she does only for about 30-45 min.

How do you get them ready to ditch pull up at night?

How do they know to wake themselfs up and go?

Also did you put something down over sheet just in case so you don't have to completing change the bed in the middle of the night???

Thanks

  • Night time training is developmental.  You can't really train for it because their bodies need to be able to wake them before the go.  Once she starts waking dry for a few weeks you can do a trial of panties at night.  We put a cheap waterproof mattress pad on his bed.  He has been trained for a year and this week is the first week he has really asked for underwear at night and it not getting up numerous times to make sure he doesn't have an accident.

    This exactly.

You can't train for at night.  The longer they are trained then they will start to train at night.

My friend just potty trained her daughter in January and just this week her little girl started going to bed in underwear.  She was dry at night for almost a month so they tried it and she did great.

  • We waited until our DD would wake up dry every day for two weeks or so, then we ditched the pull-ups completely. One thing that helped: I am terrified of my DD getting up and using the big potty while I'm not there in the middle of the night. The only thing I can picture is her falling in and not having the strength to get herself out. Anyway, we still wanted her to have access to a potty, so we put a potty in her bedroom. We reminded her each night, "Ok, if you wake up and you have to go potty, where do you go?" She'd point to it or tell it to us.

One night, at 3am, I heard, "Mama! Mamam!!! Mama!!!!! I went potty! Mama!!!" Sure enough, she went potty on the one in her room. We've had it in there every since (~8 month or so), and she's used it 15-20 times at night.

  • We have been day trained since Dec. and rarely has accidents. MAybe 2x since DEC.  but he still wears a pull up at night. At times he still wakes up wet and has never woken up to go potty. So obviously we are not ready for no pull ups.

  • What PP said.  They will night time train when they do.  Just put a pull up on her and eventually she will be dry.  DD wore one for about 6 months after being fully day trained.
  • My daughter has been daytime trained since October, but I still don't think she's anywhere near ready for nights. She rarely wakes up to go potty (I think she's done this 2 or 3 times), and she always wakes up wet. I know nights are a developmental thing, so I'm not worried about. She'll get there.

Yep, like the pps have said, nightime training is developmental.  I have one DD that was night and day trained at the same time.  She decided to wear underpants one night and I just let her go with it (she was waking up dry most of the time and has a huge bladder capacity).  She's been in underpants ever since with only a couple accidents in the past few months.  My other DD still wears a pull up at night and wakes up wet at least half of the time.  When she starts waking up dry consistently, I'll ditch the pull ups, but for now, I'm keeping them.  When I do switch her to underwear, I'll probably put an ultimate crib sheet or two back on her toddler bed for a little while for quick night time changes if necessary.

  • My DD is about 75% day trained but not night trained at all.  I figure it will happen in its own time.  My main concern is getting her PT'd for preschool.

  • Our DS has been day trained since November, and was waking up dry most mornings since Jan or Feb.  About a month ago, we switched him to underwear at night (at 2.5yrs old), and he did great for two weeks, then started having nightly accidents.  We asked him if he wanted to wear a diaper/pull-up to bed again and he said yes, so he's back in a diaper now.  We knew he was pretty young to be night trained, so we're happy to wait until he's ready again.  He's been dry about half the mornings lately.
