Come On! Jury Duty?! *whine*

I got a summons for jury duty in the mail today. Sad

I have my post-partum checkup on May 4th and I'm expected at the courthouse on May 7th!  I'm nursing and only supplement with 1 bottle of formula at bedtime.  I don't even own a pump and have no intention of buying one since I could only ever pump about 1 oz. at a time with my first baby and managed to break 2 pumps.  I would love to call my doctor's office to ask for a written excuse (as my paperwork says they require one for medical reasons) except for the fact that I received the summons today RIGHT before a long holiday weekend and the paper also says it is to be mailed back within 3 days!

Between taking time off to take care of my older son while I was in the hospital having the baby, my mom taking time off for her own surgery, and saving time to take off when I have my thyroidectomy this summer, my mom and my husband are pretty much out of days off to watch the boys.  I really hope they will let me out of it this time!

  • I got a summons for jury duty after my last child was born (back in 2003) and I got out of it by saying that my baby was just born. Hopefully you can get out of it, too!! GOOD LUCK!

  • I got the jury duty mailing waaaaaay back in September and got the call Sunday that they wanted me in court starting sometime in April.  I was like "I'm breastfeeding a newborn, born a week ago" and the woman on the other end was like "Oh, well you can ask to be exempt."  So if you're breastfeeding, I'd call up the courthouse.

Also wondering if I could use the fact that our district justice is my cousin's husband...it does ask if "you or anyone close to you" has ever worked as a cop, attorney, etc.

  • I would call the court and speak to  a human.  Ask them if your doc can fax them an excuse directly.

  • Our form always has a spot where it asks if you are a breastfeeding mom.  I breastfed my first for 2 years and I kept right on marking that little box "yes."
  • Oh that really sucks.  I am sure they will excuse you though, once you explain your situation.

  • Call the courthouse and explain the situation.  They'll give you more time to get the medical excuse out (if they even need one.)  They might be willing to just accept a copy of your LO's birth certificate or some other medical record showing the date of the baby's birth.
