20 Week Ultrasound - Problem with kidneys

So we just had our 20 week ultrasound, and in good news...It's a boy! So so very excited. 

In bad news, they found a problem with his kidneys. They said it most likely will resolve itself, but I'm still concerned (even though they told me not to stress, haha). His right kidney is bigger than it's supposed to be even at 32 weeks. They said it's because it's not draining properly/as fast as it should. (They used the analogy of the kitchen sink draining slowly.) They said by 30-32 weeks it could resolve itself, and if not by then it could also resolve at birth...but if not it'll need to be treated, possibly with surgery. 

Anyway, my question is has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did it turn out??

My brother and SIL had the same type of issue.  One kidney was smaller than the other in their u/s.  I do not know exact size.  She also thought the small one was kinked and may not function.  Well, 20 weeks later their baby girl was born and she is just fine.  She is now 11 months old and has no issues.

When my mom was pregnant with me there was an issue with one of my kidneys being large, which turned out to be a huge mass attached to it. Over 20 years ago they didnt really have the technology like today to determine that is was a mass and not just what looked like to be a large kidney.

When I was 4 the "mass" was a tumor. (Im not trying to freak you out)

As long as they dont say anything about it being a mass or growth on the kidney I would not stress. Just make sure they keep their eye on it.

My son had a dilated kidney at his 20 week ultrasound (not sure if this is the same thing as a large kidney though) and it stayed dilated the whole time and after he was born it was still dilated but he never needed surgery or anything because he was wetting lots of diapers and his kidneys were functioning just fine.  I was really freaked out about it the whole pregnancy but it turned out to be nothing.

My friend's son had that problem when she was pregnant with him. It didn't resolve during pregnancy and after he was born he continued to get ultrasounds every 6 months to watch it. He's 2.5 now and still has to have ultrasounds every 6 months but it is getting smaller now. She was freaking out about it while she was pregnant but it really turned out to be not a big deal at all even as it didn't resolve itself during pregnancy. They said the same thing to her during pregnancy, that he might need surgery if it doesn't resolve during pregnancy but hes a happy healthy 2.5 year old and it's not a big deal at all I'd try not to worry too much!!

They told me this at my 20 week ultrasound too.  I'll have another ultrasound at 33 weeks for monitoring.

My doctor told me not to worry so I'm trying not to think about it. The diameter was also not that off from normal (i think it's 0.6 more on the right). She said there have been many cases, including her sons that had a bigger difference/diameter and it was fine.

She also mentioned that this is more common for baby boys.

Yup posted my reply on the September board to the same question.  My second daughter has it and it is almost clear, she will be 3 in May.   It usually resolves itself by 1 but in rare cases it takes a bit longer.  They will monitor you through u/s and then the baby after birth.  Might have to take a antibiotic, until the can test to see if it is reflux.  If it is, that is where the minor surgery comes in to play.

I dont know if this is the samething....at my 20 ultrasound they saw some fluid in the kidneys, they called it pylectasis (sp??). I have to go back at 32 weeks to make sure the fluid didnt grow. They said its common in boys and usually clears up by birth. My ob said not to worry until after the 32wk ultrasound if it didnt clear up (great advice huh!). They told me it is usually treated right after birth and isnt really a big deal. I was freaked out too but I just have to wait and see. Good Luck!

When I was a baby and up to about 5 years old I got UTIs all the time. I had one kidney functioning around 60%, the other at 30%, and I also had problems with my tubes and proper drainage. I was on medication for my first several years of life and almost needed surgery, but then I grew out of it and my body basically learned to deal with it and I havn't had a UTI since. Even when pregnant my kidneys never gave me any problems.

So, I thought it would be a semi-positive experience to share. When the doctors say it may resolve itself, they aren't lying. Even if it doesn't and he needs a little help, I'm proof that it shouldn't hinder his life growing up. Good luck!
