FTM - Deli meat question

So I've read on here (and in books) that you should heat your deli meat.  And I understand that.  Yet I've also read on here that some things in moderation are okay.  So is it bad if I have deli meat that isn't heated?  As long as I'm not eating it everyday morning noon and night?

I'm really craving an Italian BMT from Subway, and have been for a few days, but I really don't like heated deli meat on my sandwiches.

LOL - or just really bored at work. Wink In general though, I think most of the "taboos" are fine in moderation.

Haha that works too! At least you can occupy your time with TB.  That's what I was thinking.

Ditto. For what it's worth, Subway BMT's with oil and vinegar are about the only thing that still tastes good to me, so I'm eating them.

  • Here's thing thing.

*I* think it is fine to eat unheated deli meat - as I also eat lettuce and cantaloup, which have also caused listeria outbreaks.

That said, what I do not comprehend is this "eating lunchmeat in moderation." This is not a moderation thing like caffiene. The bacteria will either be in the sandwhich you eat, or it won't. It could be in it if you only ate one sandwich your entire pregnancy and you could get sick from that one sandwich.

I guess, by eating it in moderation you are reducing your risk of bacteria in your sandwich as you have less of a chance by eating one sandwich than you have with, say, 50 of them. But, in every the one you eat, you still have that risk. Is the thought of eating in moderation really just to lower your chances? Seems silly to me, as with this, there is always that chance.

All that said, I would eat the sandwich.

I was going to say the exact same thing. Moderation doesn't apply the same way to this topic.

Oh absolutely. In the case of deli meat, I don't see the point of moderation. The moderation is more for tuna (e.g., higher in mercury fish) and glasses of wine. Wink

And vanilla lattes (once I can stand coffee again)! :-)

Agreed! I personally won't eat lunch meat because I would be neurotic for days thinking about it so I find it best to avoid causing myself a nervous breakdown! Lol! But, I so want a Subway sandwich! Maybe when I get a little further along I won't be so worried. If you are less of a basketcase then me I would say enjoy though!

  • I eat deli meat now and did through my pregnancy with DS.  Not sure how much it matters, but I did make a point to get decent brands - like Oscar Meyer or Boars Head.  I didn't get the cheap .89 packs.  I love me some turkey sandwiches!

  • My OBGYN said that she has only seen listeria once in several years. She said make sure the place you're getting your meat from is reputable. She didn't seem concerned with it much at all.

  • My OB rolled her eyes at this question. She said it's fine, and has never had a pregnant patient get listeria.

Oh man.... I had that upside down caramel machiatto yesterday and I'm trying to convince myself not to get another one today. We'll see if that lasts.

What is an upside down caramel machiatto?

Okay, so a caramel macchiato is espresso, vanilla syrup, milk, and caramel. Upside down means the caramel goes in... first? instead of last? I think that's right. I just know it's better upside down because the caramel mixes in more.

    Sounds yummy.

  • I ate deli sandwiches all the time with my other pregnancies. I would be more concerned with the nitrates and sodium than listeria. I craved hot dogs and mustard, and found a brand Applegate that I love. It's in the organic food stores and nitrate free.

If you have a bad craving, don't deprive yourself if you can help it. I say get Subway:)

  • I haven't heard of many Subway restaurants having Listeria issues.

Off the topic, I did see a big news post about Salmonella and spicy tuna rolls yesterday. Which is unusual, but I guess goes to show, it's not unheard of.

    **Lurking**

A macchiato calls for the espresso go in last, which leaves the coffee flavor mostly at the top. An upside-down macchiato has the espresso go in first with the syrup, like a regular latte or mocha. So an upside-down macchiato is just like a caramel latte with vanilla syrup. The caramel goes in last either way unless you get extra caramel on the bottom, where it melts with the espresso. (I used to work at Starbucks ;))

*Lurking* THIS. If you get lysteria, it's bad news bears for you and baby. It's highly unlikely you'll get it, but it does happen. It's up to you to make the call, but lysteria is not a "moderation" thing like caffiene. You either get it or you don't. I was way too scared of stillbirth and didn't risk it. Heated up worked for me. I also super washed all of my fruits and veggies. Call me a nut, but I would have worried even more if I went ahead and ate something and then spent all day stressing about it. That's just me, though.
