Lifetime max on clomid??

Hey girls -

We are considering TTC #2. I'm an-ovulary PCOS and clomid resistent. I take dex with clomid to make it work, but it takes 200mg of it - we did 6 rounds on the TTC #1, that resulted in 3 m/c and then finally our sweet baby boy who is 20 months now - so thankful for him. I was wondering if there was a lifetime max for clomid?? I've heard don't take more than 6 rounds, but also I've heard don't take more than 12 rounds as a life time max.

Anyone have an idea?? Thanks ladies!

Alie

Re: Lifetime max on clomid??

  • We were told 3 consecutive cycles was all they would do before moving on to something else.  But she did say lifetime max is actually 6 in Ontario.

I have heard several people have success on femara when clomid wasn't working.  You should talk to your RE about that perhaps.

  • my RE does 3 cycles on clomid and then moves onto something else.

i agree with pp about femara, it's supposed to have less side effects.

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.

  • I just did some googling (since if this cycle doesn't work, next month will be my 7th cycle on clomid) and this is the main thing I found:

"One study in the mid-1990s suggested that the risk of ovarian cancer in later life might be increased after more than 12 cycles of treatment. However, studies have failed to find a strong link between fertility drugs and ovarian cancer. Findings suggest that it is the infertility problem itself that may increase the risk, rather than the fertility drugs used to treat it."

But like others said, you can look into Femara too!

  • My RE won't let you do more than 12 lifetime cycles of clomid but with him you would never get close to that many cycles.  When I finally moved on to him I had done close 10 clomid cycles over a year and a half with my OB and he never told me ANYTHING about being an increased risk of cancer....thank GOODNESS I moved on.  So scary.  I wish I would have known earlier I wouldn't have done more than 3 to 6 cycles.

  • There is inconclusive evidence that a lifetime max is necessary, but if you are doing 12 cycles, it is likely you should have tried something else, anyway, you know?

However, for me, I take clomid WITH my stims for IVF, as I respond very well to it. So I have taken it about 7 cycles to get pregnant with TI/IUI and 2 IVF cycles, and 2 CTT cycles. I will likely add it to my upcoming IVF
