18 month old sleep regression?

any experience with this?/  I think this is what we ahve going on....my little guy used to be sooo easy!  i read 2 stories, lay him down, walk out and he's asleep.  the last 2 weeks or so its taking an hour or longer of rocking etc to get him to sleep and then he's been waking in the middle of the night.  its getting rather frustrating...tonight he didn't want his paci or blanket....he didn't want to sit in the chair and read....i tried holding him and he just straightened out and screamed...i don't know hwats up with this child or how to get past it

Re: 18 month old sleep regression?

  • Is he teething? The only time we have sleep regression when one (or both) girls are cutting new pearly whites :)  How is his appetite? No low grade fever?

Emilia was a pill about 2-3 weeks ago when she was cutting canines (sp) so maybe that's what is bugging him?

  • Oh definitely. Sleep, milestones, vocab explosion...it can be a rough time for sleep. Just keep to the routine as best as possible and give extra hugs, rocks and snuggles. This too shall pass!

  • Yup, happend for us also w naps..I was at my wits end cause I had just had miss A and need him to nap and sleep.. J's naps are just getting better I am being more consistan abt his routine and getting him down at 1230/1245 and then afro bed timeu am trying to get him out for a walk/fresh air.. He pushed his car or trike and I tire him out..seems to be working.. I also pushed back his bed time to 715/30 and he was asleep by 8pm tonight..

  • J started this at around 18 months as well. In December/Jan i went to go see my Mom before she passed and one night J woke up (he shared a bed with me) and about 2 minutes later started FLIPPING OUT he was hysterical. Nothing I did helped. I ended up sitting in the bathroom with him with the fan and light on rocking him till he fell asleep. Once he passed out I lost it. It was so terrible. It brought me back to his colic days. He was good for a little bit and then about a week ago, he started waking up in the middle of the night again. It sucks cause we end up bringing him to our room in the middle of the night and the kid sleep sideways. Head butting me and kicking his father head. Super fun! I read online that it's the age. When they start learning new things etc. it keeps them up.

Good luck. I feel your pain.

  • We're dealing with this right now!

DD has woken up at 4-5 three times this week. She usually sleeps straight through from 8-7. I don't know what to do, we've tried infant ibuprofen (she's just 21 lbs) but it doesn't seem to help. I think she's cutting her eye teeth so I'm hoping it passes soon!

I also wondered if she's starting her language explosion and that's messed up her sleep, she's picked up a couple words just the past few days.

I keep reminding myself this will pass, I've just been trying to grab a nap when she does and going to bed early.

  • teeth? possible ear infection?

It is normal to get some changes in sleep with milestones.  Keep with your routine as best you can!
