Too many solids? - Did anyone stop FF early?

Hi!

My son LOVES to eat... LOVES veggies and fruits and puffs and rice cereal.  So far, I've given him only homemade purees (squash, green beans, peas, sweet potato, apples, pears, banana, avocado, peaches, etc) and cereal (baby kinds, but at least we switched to whole grains)... and yogurt... and PUFFS which he loves.

I was wondering if anyone stopped FF or cut way back before the 1 year mark?  I'm just not sure.  Right now, he's still taking about 6 six ounce bottles a day of formula PLUS three solids meals and puffs as a snack.  But he LOVES eating solids and I'm wondering if it's ok to give him more and cut back (just a bit) on the formula... Is that bad?  Did anyone do that?  I feel like the foods are more natural and since I couldn't BF as long as I wanted, I mostly feel like formula isn't the "all natural" route.  Oh, and DS is 8 months old, just FYI.

  • I think there are two questions here. First of all, it's okay to cut back on formula if your LO really loves eating solids.

Secondly, formula is absolutely needed as their primary nutrition until they are one or close to it. And I'd rather not touch on formula not being "natural". Obviously there are not formula trees out there or animals that produce formula naturally. But it still contains the nutrition that babies need, more so than puffs and baby cereal and avocado pur?e.

There is a reason why most people do not make their own baby formula at home. It has a lot more in it than a simple pur?e.

I actually did a TON of research on making my own baby formula...it is insane how much goes into baby formula!!! Unfortunately veggies, fruits and grains do NOT contain enough of the nutrients your baby needs in the first year.

I know how you feel about FF (I HATE it) and have to FF my DD in addition to the donor breast milk we get. A better option to cutting out formula early would be to try and replace it with donor Breastmilk. Look up "Human Milk for Human Babies" for your state on Facebook. (it is your responsibility to screen donors and request blood test results).
