Cloth Diapering

Tell me about your wool...

I'm teetering on the fence of purchasing some fitted/wool combos for overnight (right now all we have are pockets and AIOs)... After several nights of soaking through everything I can think to stuff those darn things with, I think it might be time.

The problem is I know nothing about fitteds or wool. Ha! I read the FAQ about it, which helped a lot. Here are my remaining questions....

What is the best fitted? I was thinking of ordering 6 Mediums from GMD. My girls aren't quite 15lbs yet but they will probably be there in like a week!

Do you add anything to your fitteds for extra absorbancy?

How many wool covers do I need for two babies? Just two? I know they don't require washing that often, but do you have backup wool?

What is your favorite wool cover? I would like to get something good quality, but maybe on the less expensive end of the spectrum. Any good etsy recommendations?

Anything else you want to enlighten me with?! Thanks!!

Re: Tell me about your wool...

  • IMO the best fitted is the GMD Workhorse fitteds.  They are so simple, but so amazing (& inexpensive too!).  Definitely my favorite diaper right now!

We do add inserts to our fitteds (we do a LOT of inserts b/c DS is a really heavy wetter at night)--
We use a newborn (small, yellow-edged) Cloth-Eez doubler, a large Cloth-Eez doubler, and a hemp Stay-Dry doubler.  The hemp doubler makes all the difference for us--one side is fleece, so it stays dry-feeling against his skin all night & the hemp absorbs SO MUCH!  The doublers we use are here: https://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/doublers.htm

As far as wool goes, we use Woollybottoms.  The website is a little difficult to navigate (https://woollybottoms.bigcartel.com/) & a lot of the items are "sold out" right now, but they are the best IMO.  They're affordable (a lot of wool I found was really pricey) & except for a little bit of pilling, they've held up really well (we got them about a year ago).

We have 2 wool covers for DS right now (will be getting more when DS #2 arrives in August).  I'd actually prefer to have 3 for each baby for nighttime, but I'm not sure we'll do that...don't know yet.
Even though it doesn't need washed really frequently (usually about once every 2 weeks or so), we do have the occasional poopsplosion & the cover will be out of commission for a couple of days to air dry.

  • I just bought my first woolybottom soaker from cottonbabies.com. It was around $21 and shipped for free. Can't wait to try it out! Oh, and I use the sbish snapless fitted- it's great :)

  • I have a few pieces of wool 2 sbish that I rotate at night and a couple of my eco baby (etsy) that I use during the day.

I have a few random fitteds, muttaquin, and a couple of no names that I use during the day.

The only ones I use at night are either B4's which I like but they ship from Canada which is a pain in the arse but they are pretty nice diapers.  My fave night time diaper is Old School Cool I don't need any extra absorbency and it's often dry on the outside in the am.   She is stalking tomorrow on hyena cart with some uber cute prints.

  • Pp gave good options, can you sew though? I didnt buy any woolies premade, but I did some online tutorials and youtube to learsome basic sewing with my moms help and we upcycled a few wool sweaters. Gave me way more wool to use without the high cost..... Just a thought.  We have a few twinkie tush fitteds that when we did use them for overnight we did add a hemp babies doubler to help with absorbamcy but he sleeps about 11-12 hours at night.
