Late Term and Child Loss

Visit with MFM today and question for fellow TTCALL

I had an appointment with the MFM that delivered James today to discuss what happened with James and what should be done with future pregnancy.  (I went into PTL due to infection)  He believes that the infection was more than likely there due to incompetent cervix and is recommending that I have a cerclage and do progesterone shots with next pregnancy.   I mentioned to him that I was thinking about changing OB with the next pregnancy so that I would deliver at the hospital where James was delivered since they have a NICU.  Also mentioned that I didn't think my current OB and I would be a good fit since I would be high maintenance and current OB is too laid back for that.  The MFM dr said that he would see me in correlation with my OB, or even though he usually didn't extend this offer to most, he offered to be my primary OB during next pregnancy since as he said I would be so "high maintenance"  (that was said in a loving and understanding way, BTW).  So, what would you all do?

  • I am in a somewhat similar situation in that I will be considered "high maintenance" if we get pregnant again. My perinatologist also said that he would take me on and he would be my primary OB if my DH and I would like that. We thought about it a lot because I didn't really jive with my normal OB while pregnant with my daughter. My DH and I discussed this and since we seem to get along with our perinatologist very well and he is much more diligent than my other OB, we are going to with him. Do whatever you think is best for you and your family and good luck with your decision.

  • I currently have weekly p17 shots from week 16 to 36 and at week 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24 have transvaginal US cervical checks.  this in conjunction with all the normal things, i am at the doctor about 2 times a week.  Welcome to the high maintence club.  We lost the twins to an infection of unknown origin which brought on PTL but they arent ruling out PTL coming first which is why all of the precautions.  If you dont feel comfortable with your doctor, go with the offer.  You HAVE to feel comfotable and feel as though you are being treated to the best of their ability and with their complete attention.  Yes, we are attention wh0res and poud.

  • I would probably take the MFM up on the offer to see you as your primary OB.  I'm going to be pushing for that also - I feel like the OBs at my clinic (although they're perfectly nice) are way too laid back and are not used to dealing with high-risk pregnancies.  Good luck with your decision.

  • I agree with PP.  I really liked my OB, but since she works at a big practice I didn't like it when I had to see someone else or when the other dr.s seemed too "laid back."  I will be going with my MFM as my primary.

  • I'm not pg again yet, but I think you've GOT to have a good comfort level w/ your doctor. I have found a new OB who seems very responsive and understanding. I will see her in conjunction w/ the high risk OB. It feels a little reassuring to have a good plan in place.
