Toddlers: 24 Months+

***sunny-d***Question

Hello! I read your post from yesterday about your daughter and the UTI's. My daughter as well has these same issues...almost exact symptoms as your daughter and is on a daily antibotic as well. I was curious if your daughter had reflux or anything like that? They tested my daughter for all that and all tests came back fine and said it was something she would have to outgrow. Just wanted to compare what your dr told you vs what my dr told me. Your the first I have read with what sounds like identical issues!

Re: ***sunny-d***Question

  • Sorry, I just saw this. We had to do the kidney ultrasound and a VCUG test(with sedation) on her and both came back negative.  They basically said that she has a large bladder and she is holding her urine too much.  So, like your daughter it is something that she will have to outgrow.  The doctors and nurse practitioners all tell me that it would be better if she would use the potty instead of the diaper, as if I am not trying.  She refuses to use the potty to the point of holding her urine for 8 or more hours, which makes her have another UTI.  So, for now I just encourage her to use the potty if she wants to and do not put any pressure on her.  The other weird thing for her is that almost every UTI has been a different bacteria.  Some that even her pediatrician has been a little suprised by.  So far with the medication she hasn't had anymore UTIs but I hate her being on an antibiotic so much.  So, when I take my other daughter in for her 1 year in May I am going to talk with him more about what we can do for her.

To give you some perspective, my daughter is now 29 months.  We didn't really have the UTI problem until she was about 1 1/2, but I think that this is because she had a lot of ear infections when she was younger.  She was almost constantly on antibiotics for ear infections until she got her tubes at 14 months.  So, There were a couple of times when she was younger that we thought she might have a UTI, but she would also have an ear infection and so they didn't put her through the trauma of a catheter.  She is also the type to pick up germs easily.  She looks like a really healthy kid, but she would catch every illness at daycare.  Her doctor basically told me I needed to take her out of daycare until she got older.  She still gets things from music class and playgroups, but at least I am not missing work to take care of her.

I just really hope that she starts to use the potty on her own and gets through this.   HTH

My daughter got her first uti when she was 4 months old and the only reason I knew something was not right was because of her extreme fussiness and her diaper would smell extremely funky like she pooped when she had only peed. She had all the necessary tests and all came back fine so we were told we just needed to treat them as she got them...I was told this by her primary dr and the chief urologist with the Childrens Hospital I had her seeing. Well just recently she got one and the antibotics that normally helped her were no longer helping her...she was on one antibotic showed clean sample on her followup..weekend comes and shes crying again....get on another antibotic...clears up and within 2 days it was back. Her dr said ok time to get her back to urologist and put her on a preventative antibotic...her urologist...a new one from first one said he sees LOTS of girls and boys come in with issues like this and there is no real reason they can pin point but it is something she should outgrow....he said on the daily antibotic if she gets another one she may need to have the VCUG and kidney ultrasound ran again but most times the first test is accurate and for now the daily antibotic is the way to go. Her med is that Nitrofuratonin I think is the name.

They ran a test not that long ago to make sure she had no kidney scarring since she has had so many but that test came back fine as well, which makes me extremely thankful. I think this is due to the fact she has never ran fever with any of her Utis because I get her in to her dr the day she starts fussing...she has had enough to know the symptoms right away.

My daughter has had roughly 15 Utis in her short life so far and it is absolutely heartbreaking Sad I dont know anyone who has gone through what we are going through so thanks for sharing your story with me! Most ppl dont understand when I tell them..the easy answer for them is to switch drs and something has to be wrong with her. Gee thanks Crying
