1st Trimester

Subchorionic hemorrhage

I just had my first u/s. By my LMP I'm 6w, but I ovulated 3 days 'late' so I should really be 5w4d. We only saw a gestational sac, yolk sac,  possible fetal pole and possible tiny heartbeat. (They were so tiny I couldn't really see them...measured less than 2mm. Nurse supposedly could kind of seen what may be that) Which i guess can be considered normal?

The worse part though is that I have a subchorionic hemmorrhage and they said we have a 50/50 chance of this being a viable pregnancy. They said even after seeing a heartbeat (hopefully next week) we still have a high chance of losing the baby. We just have to wait until my body absorbs the blood or I bleed it out.

I'm so scared to lose this baby. All I want is for my daughter to have a little sister or brother! Through infertility and other miscarriages and just can't do this again...I'm a mess. Anyone else experience this? (And please, no need to sugar coat things.) My RE just said we have to wait...it's 50-50 chance.

Re: Subchorionic hemorrhage

  • I had a subchorionic hemorrhage with my son. It caused me to bleed for about a week, the doctors put me on bed rest for three days. I was bleeding bright red and even passed a few clots, I was sure that I lost the little guy. In the end though he was just fine. When I delivered there was scar tissue on the placenta abut the size of a half dollar. I wish I could give you reassuring words, just try to remain positive and take it as easy as you can.

  • Think positive thoughts.  I had a subchorionic hemorrhage, it had absorbed itself by our 12 week NT scan.  Sending you happy thoughts.

  • If it does absorb itself, do I still have a high risk of preterm labor, placenta abruption, etc? Or is that only if it doesn't 'fix' itself.

  • Sending you good thoughts and prayers!!  I have not had experience with that at all, but I can only imagine how hard the waiting is.  Hope it all works out for the best for you!!
  • I was told I have a SCH as well, but I didn't hear anything about a 50-50 chance of miscarriage.  Was it right next to where your baby was?  From what I've read online the biggest risk is if it gets between your baby and the placenta.

Yes, the hemmorrhage was right behind the gestational sac. The gestational sac and hemmorrhage were about the same size.

  • I've been doing a lot researching and it seems like most cases end up being fine.  I know that doesn't do much for you, as I'm very nervous about mine as well.  Hopefully we're both in the majority that don't have any issues with it.  GL to you!

  • I had a subchorionic hemorrhage with Aubrey.. when I was 9 weeks along, I started spotting so they did an u/s and that's when the discovered it. They didn't put me on pelvic rest or anything.. just told me we'd have to wait it out. By my 12 week u/s, the hemorrhage was completely gone (had absorbed itself- I didn't spot much after 10 weeks) and obviously everything turned out okay. Prayers coming your way that it clears itself!!

  • I had bleeding at around 6 weeks, but the baby was much smaller and they couldn't see it on the u/s.  They thought it was ectopic because my hcg levels were at 4000.  The next time I went in, they saw the baby and heart beat but it measured at like 5w2d.  They gave me a 50/50 chance, like you.  I had really bad bleeding almost like a period for a whole weekend around 7 weeks. But the baby was still there.  I'm now at around 9 weeks and I'm still having a bit of spotting, but the baby is still growing.  Hemotoma is allegedly smaller.  They said I probably had a vanishing twin.  The doctor seems more optimistic now. This entire pregnancy has been totally nerve-wracking.  Hang in there.

  • I have heard some drs put you on baby asprin which helps thin the blood so it bleeds out...might want to ask I would do anything possible! unfortunatally my Dr said not to worry about it did nothing and I had a miscarriage at 10 and half weeks. Praying for you and a better outcome!
  • I had a huge one.  While there is no scientific proof as to why, IF patients commonly get these...my RE said they see them in about 50% of patients.  Mine probably started around week 8, but they didn't catch it via u/s, so I got to rush to the ER after a giant gush and a clot half the size of my fist.  I continued to bleed at varying levels until week 19, and spotted until 22.  Normally they resolve by week 20, but mine was declared resolved at 23 weeks.  There are details and u/s pics in my blog starting Dec. 2010 if you want more info about it.

ETA:  I asked many times, but all drs. I spoke with said it would not increase my risk for placental abruption or PTL (even after DS came 5 weeks early, they did not think there was a corealation as my 27 week cervical length check was great).    If the SCH is above the baby there is a greater risk than if it is below it.  Mine was below and in front, so my cervix acted as a pressure release valve (hence the several major bleeds I had).  My SCH was the same size as the entire amniotic sac at 13 weeks.
