Toddlers: 24 Months+

In reference to the 33 m/o post below...

When do you stop using months and just go with years. I'm what feels like 9 years pregnant, and I can't use my brain for anything right now. People ask me how old my DD is and I struggle to remember how many months old she is and she's only 21 months old. I'll never make it into the 30's!

  • I personally think at age 2.  When someone tells me their kid is 32 months old, I have to get my fingers out to figure out what that actually is.

  • Yeah, I'm an almost-two, two, two-and-a-half kinda person.  People don't care beyond that, in my opinion.  If someone tells me 32 months, it feels like reporting the age of a baby.

  • I usually say 2 1/2 for my kids but when I'm asking something developmental related, I'll use months b/c I feel like even 2 months can make a big difference developmentally depending on what you're talking about- I would say they are 2 1/2 from about 27 months til 32 or so months (and then start saying 'almost 3') but there is a big difference (IMO) in things my kids could do or I'd expect them to do at 27 months vs 32 months. Just my opinion. I don't think it matters related to a physical feature but can matter when you're talking development.
  • After 18 months. Then, it was "a year and a half", or "almost 2".

If you said 34 months or something, I'd not have a clue without doing math.

  • 2 for me, too. I might use 2 and a half when the time comes around, but that's really it.

This. If some random person I'm speaking with or whatever asked her age I would say almost 3. But in a case of talking with someone on development Id be spot on.

  • I say 2 now, and quit using months once he hit the twenties.  It's just too hard.

  • Frankly, I think it's a little weird when people use months after a kid turns 2.  And I really think there's no real need after a kid is 18 months.

Unless there's a very specific, developmental reason, telling me your kid is "almost 2" or "two and a half" is good enough.  And even then, telling me "she'll be 3 at the end of July" is probably more helpful than telling me she's 32 months old.

But, I'm also very bad at doing basic math in my head.  So I don't want to have to translate "30 months" into two and a half years :-)

  • FYI...I rarely use "my DD is 33 mth's old" -- I usually say "my DD will be 3 in June."  But I didn't want to write "Visible Epiglottis in my DD who will be 3 in June."  LOL!

Plus, I just got off the phone with the nurse and they always use mths so it was fresh on my brain.

  • Around 18 mos-2 years I stopped using months.  It just seemed like too much work to figure it out after awhile.
