Visible Epiglottis in my 33 month old

So my DD who will be 3 in June told me her throat felt "funny" yesterday.  I didn't think much of it becuase she showed no other signs of being sick but after her bath last night, I took a look.  I was shocked to see this little flap rise up in the back of her throat.  I had no clue what it was so I immediately googled and came to find out it was her epiglottis (the flap that covers teh wind pipe).  Anyhow, I called hte on-call nurses at my pedi office and they said the biggest worry is Epiglotittis which can be deadly.  Since she didn't show signs of this (fever, not eating, etc) they said not to wake her (this was like 11:30pm) but to ensure she was seen today.  Now I am waiting for hte office to open and I'm freaking out.

She did wake up with signs of a cold (running nose) and her voice sounds "stuffy" so I'm even mroe worried now.

Anyone ever experience this?

  • First, a disclaimer: I am NOT a physician! But I do know a little about the anatomy of the oropharynx. It can be normal for a kid to have a visible epiglottis. Generally, as they grow it moves from view. Epiglottitis can be dangerous- it can cause trouble breathing (you might hear loud almost squeaky or wheezy sounds) or trouble swallowing (the epiglottis moves with a swallow so inflammation could make swallowing painful or just plain hard to do). I hope everything is ok and that you get to check in with the doctor soon!
