Mabel pronunciation

I love this name and I've been pronouncing it like label or cable in my head but my sister thinks its may-belle.

So baby namers... help me out please! How would you say it?

    Rhymes with cable.  If it were pronounced "may-belle" it would be spelled Maybelle or something along those lines.

    It does rhyme with cable, but the correct spelling is Mabel. Please spell it the right way or it'll just look weird.

    I pronounce it like label or cable. But I was recently looking at the SSA list for top baby names in 1900, and there are a ton of variations that were used in that time! I was surprised because I thought youneek spellings were more of a modern thing. If I remember correctly, the top 500 included Mabel, Maybell, and Maybelle (and maybe a few others).

    Yes, Mabel is pronounced MAY-b?l, exactly like label.

    Perhaps your sister is applying her knowledge of the pronunciation of Annabel, which is actually pronounced AN-na-BELL, and mistakenly applying it to Mabel, the ending of which is spelled the same, but not pronounced the same.

    This. I know a Maybelle. It's different from Mabel, which rhymes with label.
