Ok, I've had a couple of incidents that I can overlook. But as of late, I'm concerned. I have an older woman who watches LO. She is an acquaintance's mother. She watched her grandson's when they were babies, they are now 3 and 5. My biggest issue lately. 3 weeks ago I brought her size 3 diapers and said you can just give me back the 2's and use the 3's. she said that she just had a few left and would just use them up. Ok, I appreciate your frugalness. Well 2 weeks go by and everytime I pick him up, he is in a size 2 diaper. Last week I say, aren't you done with those size 2's? She says "I still have a few" , I say, ok well he's clearly to big for those, so just start using the 3's. I pick him up, he's in a 2. (this is friday). Monday I forget to say something and when I pick him up he's in a different outfit, so I say, oh what happened, did he throw up? she says no, this is his third outfit, he keeps wetting himself. So a little snarky I say, well that's because you're using diapers that are too small. I leave upset. Now at the same time I am wondering how on earth does she still have size 2 diapers??? I gave her the size 2's like 6-7 weeks ago and then the 3's 3 weeks ago. Is she not changing him enough???
So I bring him to day and firmly say, please start using the 3's. No 2's. Good news is, he was in a 3 when he came home, bad news is, he was soaking wet. WTF???????
Re: Child care concerns...thoughts?
Ok, I would be pretty annoyed... The whole thing seems strange.
But... Maybe a stupid question: does she know to point his penis down? If that bad boy is pointing up, it doesn't matter what size the diaper is, you know? Where is he wet? Around his waist band or down his legs? When you picked him up and he was wet, was the diaper saturated?
Because we're fancy like that.
Well today when I picked him up it was around his waste, so thought maybe, like you said he penis was pointing up and she didn't really pull the diaper as tight as I would. Diaper wasn't saturated no. So what you are saying is something I definitely thought about, but when she handed him to me I could feel he was wet, how could she not? ya know?
DS goes to an in home daycare also and I pack a diaper bag everyday. I just put more diapers and extra clothes in every night. It sounds like you've solved the problem of the wrong size but it does sound like she isn't changing him often enough. Can you pack a bag and you'll know exactly how many diapers she's used? If you see that he's not changed enough then I would tell her that it's important to change him more frequently to prevent diaper rash, etc.

I use cloth diapers but I do this same thing. I pack 5 diapers a day and generally there are 2 left when I pick dd up. Sometimes 1 left depending on if she pooped at an odd time or not. Packing diapers daily would tell you how many your child is using a day.
my advice is to ask her directly how often she changes him, and if you aren't happy with her answer then give her very specific instructions for how often he should be changed. also, ask her how it is she was able to make a pack of size 2 diapers last as long as she did if she changed him x times a day. then ask her if she has any size 2s left and if she does, take them back so she can't put them on him anymore.
If the problem is not changing him often enough I would be beside myself. I think this is a situation where you have to be direct with his DCP and find out what is going on.
I hope it goes smoothly!
You might want to introduce a log that your DCP would fill out daily. My DCP fills out a sheet that has a spot for breakfast, lunch, snack (time and what was eaten), bottles (time and how much), naps (start and end times) and diapers (wet, poop, dry and the time). They also circle at the bottom what we need more of (it's pre-printed with diapers, wipes, formula, other). This is very helpful to me as I know what DS did all day. This might help her remember to change him more often since you will be monitoring it. I'd also keep track of when you bring the diapers and how long they last.
But, first. I would talk to her and ask her to change him more often and have more dialogue with her at drop off and pick up.
I agree with the log; we are in a center, but even when we were in IHC she gave us a log. You can also put things like what he ate, things she needs, etc.
That isn't to say that she won't put that she changed him when she didn't but it might help. I would definitely do the diaper bag thing to maybe find that out?
