Hi my LO is breastfed and is taking about 4-6 oz of solids a day. He has been constipated ever since starting solids. I make my own and we have tried all the poop initiating ones, prunes, peas, pears, mango (someone recently suggested that) but he's still backed up. He's not uncomfortable but he does strain to get 2 marble sized poos every day. Should I give him a suppository? I did once when he didn't go for 14 days as my pedi suggested it at that point and it worked but I don't want to do it if it's not necessary. TIA!
Re: Constipation, WWYD?
This. I just spoke to pedi about this today - she said to do about 1 oz juice (pear or prune) and 1 oz water every day to try and get her back to regular, soft, comfortable stools. She said only giving the juice once in a while when there's a problem probably won't help too much-so I'm gonna try that every day for a while and see what happens. DD only went 4 days without pooping but she was really uncomfortable for those 4 days. Once she went she was ok for a little while but then started straining to go again (today was the 2nd day) so I tried the juice today and she pooped about an hour after she finished drinking it.
Do NOT do this. This can be very dangerous as corn syrup can cause botulism and make your LO seriously ill. While this used to be common practice, pediatricians (including ours) vehemently recommend AGAINST doing this. Here's an article from Mayo Clinic about it. The article also has constipation remedy suggestions.
OP - have you considered backing off of solids for a few days to let him clear out? BM naturally helps to get things moving and going EBF for a few days should get things moving and help to unstop him.
