Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Not what I expected

So I began the devastating process of having a miscarriage last week on Thursday when my Dr. told me it was inevitable and was going to happen according to my dropping levels.  I lost all of my pregnancy symptoms the day before that (Wednesday) and on Saturday, I started to bleed.  But, it was not at all what I expected.  I was prepared for a LOT of blood, but that was not the case.  It started brown with black stringy things in it (TMI, I know) and then it did turn bright red, but I didn't even need a thick pad.  It was basically like my regular period (they have always been pretty light).  I did notice some "tissue" like lumps when I wiped and in the toilet after I would pee, but nothing alarming.  I did have have worse-then-normal cramps, but I wasn't doubled over in the dramatic pain I expected to be in.

It was very early in my pregnancy, about 5 or 6 weeks, but I still expected more.

I'm going in tomorrow for an ultra-sound, but I was hoping to avoid needing a d&c thinking nature would take it's course.  But it seems like nature would have been a little harsher than that.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Not what I expected

  • Sorry to hear about your loss.  I went through the same thing.  I was right at six weeks, too.  The first day I did pass a few clots (sorry so graphic!), and noticed a tiny bit of tissue when I had to give a urine sample at the emergency room (of course mine happened over a holiday weekend so I had to go to the ER!).  I had some bad cramping for about thirty minutes when it first started but after that, not a single cramp.  My bleeding wasn't heavy at all, either, and it only lasted for about four days.

Fortunately, I didn't have to have any further procedures.  They'll probably want to test your HCG levels for a few days to make sure that they're going down.  My doctor said as long as it gets below 5, you're good to go without a procedure.

As an aside, I have my first post-MC period as we speak, and it's considerably heavier than my miscarriage was!! Funny how things work.

  • Okay...well that helps.  I just read so much on the internet stories of people doubled over in pain needing narcodic pain meds to get them through and bleeding so much they passed out...etc.  I braced myself for that and just was baffled when it never happened.  I'll know tomorrow for sure, however it is still comforting knowing that others have experienced it this way, so thank you for the replies. xoxo
  • i thought the same thing, i was like oh crap i didn't have enough pain to have it be over but was very relieved when i had my ultra sound that nothing remained and nature had taken it's course. hopefully same for you and all is well :)
