NBR someone just tried to scam me on craigslist

People must be really stupid in the world...I have a dining table listed for sale on craigslist and some lady/man/person?? just tried to scam me into sending them $500 western union in order to arrange pickup.  Who falls for this stuff??  It's been reported.  I hate people like that, makes me not want to do craigslist anymore.

Re: NBR someone just tried to scam me on craigslist

  • i had that happen to me too once. their original contact sounded normal, so we emailed back and forth a few times arranging the sale and then it got weird and i realized it was a scam. i was totally creeped out at that point they knew my name from my email and approx location where i lived! i reported it and just never responded again.  it's creepy what weirdos are out there and often get away with things like this!

  • Ugh I tried to sell a vehicle on craigs list once and I still get scams for it.  They want it but don't want to come look.  Pay my agent this extra money and he'll write you a check.  Send it western union and I'll send you a check.  Etc.  It's rediculous and very annoying.  The first guy sounded really interested but if you don't want to see the vechicle, I'm fairly certain you aren't really trying to buy it.  One guy wanted to write me a check for more than the amount and have me western union the difference to his "agent" who would pick up the truck.  Nice.

  • Extremely common. Craigslist has some examples of scam inquiries that are helpful to review before responding to any emails.

  • I worked at a bank and you would not believe the amount of people who come in and try to deposit the fraudulent bank drafts they receive from these deals! And then, as a teller, we have to ask questions and they would get so bent out of shape that I was "being nosy". I tried to convince so many people that they were being scammed, but they would still deposit the cheque, I would hold it for weeks because I knew it would come back fake, and they would still write these people cheques.

Some people just want to believe they are going to get something for more than its worth, or some inheritance from a relative they've never heard of. Its really sad that people can delude themselves into thinking that way.

I used to work in a bank too and have so many stories of this happening. It's amazing how many people fall for scams.
